Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and Everything in Between), by Lauren Graham

In this collection of personal essays, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood reveals stories about life, love, and working as a woman in Hollywood—along with behind-the-scenes dispatches from the set of the new Gilmore Girls, where she plays the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore once again.

In Talking as Fast as I Can, Lauren Graham hits pause for a moment and looks back on her life, sharing laugh-out-loud stories about growing up, starting out as an actress, and, years later, sitting in her trailer on the Parenthood set and asking herself, “Did you, um, make it?” She opens up about the challenges of being single in Hollywood (“Strangers were worried about me; that’s how long I was single!”), the time she was asked to audition her butt for a role, and her experience being a judge on Project Runway (“It’s like I had a fashion-induced blackout”).

In “What It Was Like, Part One,” Graham sits down for an epic Gilmore Girls marathon and reflects on being cast as the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore. The essay “What It Was Like, Part Two” reveals how it felt to pick up the role again nine years later, and what doing so has meant to her.

Some more things you will learn about Lauren: She once tried to go vegan just to bond with Ellen DeGeneres, she’s aware that meeting guys at awards shows has its pitfalls (“If you’re meeting someone for the first time after three hours of hair, makeup, and styling, you’ve already set the bar too high”), and she’s a card-carrying REI shopper (“My bungee cords now earn points!”).

Including photos and excerpts from the diary Graham kept during the filming of the recent Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, this book is like a cozy night in, catching up with your best friend, laughing and swapping stories, and—of course—talking as fast as you can.

Good as a guide
By Soaring Heart
but not to be used solely for writing care plans and here's the main reason why: there are very few rationales. Too few. In the care plans I was required to write, I had to have scientific rationales for each and every intervention. This book includes some rationales but not one for each intervention. I did use this book some but it will not be enough alone for those whose teacher, like mine, requires quoted rationales for each intervention of your care plan. Furthermore, the new NANDA approved Nursing Diagnoses for 2005-2006 aren't included which I was expected to know and start using when applicable this school year. So I had to go out and buy a new care plan book. I think this guide is intended, as the title suggests, for Nurses already working as a pocket guide, and not specifically for nursing students. It is a bit too tall and heavy to keep in your pocket working in the hospital but you could leave it at your station.

This book does have its merits. What I like most is that the diagnoses are alphabetized for quick reference, which is useful after client interviews to double check my potential ideas of a diagnosis before I'd go home to stay up into the wee hours of the night preparing my client's diagnoses and plans of care for next day's clinical. Also I found very helpful the laminated card in the back of the book of all the diagnoses and their catagories (which can be comfortably carried in my pocket btw) because my teacher only wanted for the first semester care plans, two physiological and one psychosocial diagnosis per client. One has to have a clear understanding of each type of diagnosis as the critical ones should be done and listed first. Remember your ABC's (A=airway, B=breathing C=circulation. )

Bottom line, this book is good but not as your primary nursing care plan guide book, in my opinion. Good luck to all future nurses!

Soar!

This book is GOLD!
By A Customer
This has been a wonderful resource for writing my first care plans as a nursing student starting out in my clinical med/surg rotation. If you can only buy one book, buy this one. It's easy to use, specific, and all the diagnoses are arranged according to Gordon's functional health patterns. And there are really great "cheat sheets" in the front for SOAPIE notes and LOTS of short assessments (e.g. respiration, pain, elimination, etc.) It saves you from wanting to carry around your textbook in the hospital! Plus, it's just the right size and not heavy.

This is the pocket guide of choice for our nursing school, and it does not take long to find out why. It contains the NANDA nursing diagnoses, as well as medical diagnoses. Very nice layout; it'll take you step by step through the nursing process. One of our instructors told us it's not the best one that's out there, but I think that has more to do with personal preferences and needs.

Almost as Engrossing as it is Frustrating
By John Farago
An important resource for experienced and serious cooks, this cookbook is simultaneously engrossing and infuriating. Organized in a manner that follows the structure of Ducasse's actual cooking school in three large divisions -- Easy, Medium, and Difficult, there's no easy upfront way to scan the recipes by content. I mean, how many times does one sit down and say, "I think i'd like a plate of something of intermediate difficulty as the main course for this party."? By similar token there are thousands of photos, but the vast majority are not much larger than enthusiastic postage stamp commemoratives, and the reproduction and relatively substantial distance from which the photos are often taken makes it very difficult to figure out what they are presenting unless you study the text closely and try to work backwards to see what the photo might be.

And the text, while precise, is often not terribly clear. Do you easily visualize what it means to say, "Overturn a deep container on parchment paper. Arrange the skewers on top of the overturned container, letting their ends extend past both sides."?

The indexes are helpful but also opaque. That quotation above is from a recipe for Chocolate Caramel Chestnuts. Trying to find it to come back to it for this review, I recalled that it was a chestnut paste confection, but little else. I could skim the entire book, or perhaps the Difficult section (since I recalled that as well), but looking in the Alphabetical index I got nowhere because the primary ingredient (chestnut) is not the first word. So there's an index by type of dish. But is this a Dessert & Pastry? Or a Dessert, Plated? or a Dessert, Shared? Or a Confectionery?

Well, there's an Index by Ingredient. But it doesn't zero in as finely as Chestnut Paste, so you have to settle for Chestnut. When you go there all it lists are three page numbers, without any names. There are also indexes by cooking utensil and by cooking time.

There is no Foreword or Afterword, no description of the book's strategy or goals; indeed no description of who wrote it (within the book there are four chefs' b biographies at the very end, near the copyright information, none of whom is in fact Alain Ducasse; and almost all of the recipes include chefs' tips (presumably from one of these four).

As an accompaniment to courses at Ducasse's cooking school, it makes a great documentation. And it makes quite a wonderful resource if you're willing to sit down and simply read it even though there is nothing anecdotal or engaging about the prose style. You can find many recipes worth trying, and perhaps make a list of them so that as occasions that might suit one or another arise you can tickle your memory and try one or more of them out.

I'm really glad I bought it, though it's incredibly frustrating that this very same collection of recipes could be so much more useful if presented in a different manner. And it's surely no school all by itself. The basic techniques section comes in an Appendix at the end. The recipes as presented don't connect in a way that invites you to generalize skill or experience acquisition if you simply cook them in order (each of the three sections is organized around category of dish not around instructional goal; but without a Table of Contents for each section it's hard even to see that that's what is going on.

The price of this book is pretty hefty, but that's only the start of the commitment you need to make in order to get the most out of owning it.

This deluxe edition of the classic biography is embellished with pictures that help to bring the story to life. Many of the photographs were taken at the actual locations in the Deer Creek country of northern California where Ishi was born and lived for nearly half a century as a "wild" Indian. Also included are many contemporary photographs, nineteenth-century drawings, maps, and, of course, the thirty-two photographs that were included in the original edition.

Ishi stumbled into the twentieth century on the morning of August 29, 1911, when, desperate with hunger and with terror of the white murderers of his family, he was found in the corral of a slaughterhouse near Oroville, California. Finally identified as an Indian by an anthropologist, Ishi was brought to San Francisco by Professor T. T. Waterman and lived there the rest of his life under the care and protection of Alfred Kroeber and the staff of the University of California's Museum of Anthropology.

Meet the Monster....and He is Us
By Tome Raider
It isn't too common for me to start crying by the ending of a book. But this story brought me to tears. I really came to admire this reticent and dignified man, and the people who befriended him, and it saddens me to think of all the other people like Ishi who were mercilessly slaughtered. Ishi is really a representative of that hunted and slaughtered class, a class that existed right here on this California soil, and a slaughter which was perpetrated by people I thought I admired: the good old cowboy types.

This is a story of epic character (Ishi's) and epic cruelty. Please do not misunderstand me: this is not a book which has any intent of guilt-tripping anyone. But it did take me by surprise, because you can talk about slavery all day long, or the Nazis, and I feel no relation, no nexus between myself and those crimes. But, here, I felt a little weird. The degenerate conduct is very close to home, literally and figuratively. I had cowboy guns and chaps as a kid, and I pretended to shoot Indians. And that is a really pathetic thing to pretend, because Ishi was an Indian, and I've learned he was just like you and me. He and his people were rational and empathetic. There had to have been a more humane way to co-exist.

"The true ghastliness of these events is that they were carried out not by alien monsters but by people shockingly like you and me."--Karl Kroeber in the Foreword to the book written by his mother. That's exactly right. This book describes how Ishi's family and tribe was basically hunted down and exterminated right in front of his eyes as a child, in at least two major massacres and a few other lesser atrocious moments. It breaks your heart. I always thought the Indians scalped the settlers. In this book, it is the local sheriff and his gang of quasi-criminals that is scalping the Indians, including their children, in retaliation for a theft of some beans or the killing of a cow, or some other handy excuse. "No state in the Union surpassed the Golden State in systematically and shamelessly harassing, murdering, and stealing from its native inhabitants." Since I live in California, this strikes a painful chord as well. The data cited by Ms. Kroeber is compelling and I suspect unrefuted. The conduct she describes is well documented and uncontested. These Indian peoples were treated like vermin, just a little over a hundred years ago, right where your wine grapes are now growing, or nearby.

I'm perhaps unduly emphasizing negative themes. I just learned of these events, or perhaps I should say I just finally comprehended them while reading the book. They struck me out of the blue. This education about nearby and recent enormous cruelties is just a part of the reading experience, however, and isolating these events does this fantastic story no favor, and I apologize. Rest assured, this is a life-altering book, and I've mentioned only the part which shocked me in a negative way.

Ishi the man is a wonderful character, he is warmly introduced and developed here, and I can think of no character, real or fiction, which I came to care about more than Ishi. He was capable, strong, polite, free from bitterness, totally alone. His champions and protectors, Professors Kroeber and Waterman, and Dr. Popey, I came to admire and respect and envy. I loved the depictions of wild nature, and Ishi's ability to make handicrafts, a skill-set described in fabulous detail by Mrs. Kroeber. You may want to make an arrowhead or a bow based on her description. Ishi recommends Mountain Juniper for your bow-making, so heed his advice, he was master.

The writing is first-rate. Mrs. Kroeber was herself a scientist, and her book takes an artful but methodical approach to the events--both tragic and hilarious-- it describes: the way of the Indians; the way of the Yana (Ishi's tribe); the experiences Ishi endured during his hard life in the wild; the discovery of Ishi; the revelations from Ishi; the "camping trip" with Ishi in his old home territory (and his anxiousness to return to the city: he learned to love beds, toilets, stoves, towels, and the other "clever" inventions of the white man); and Ishi's demise from tuberculosis.

I am one of those people who marks up a book as I read it. My copy had virtually every page marked up by the end. This book is so thought-provoking and idea-rich on so many levels it will take me years to fully asimilate it.

One of the newspaper reviewers is quoted on the cover: "A book every American ought to read." True. And, I suspect, every American will be deeply enriched and rewarded for the effort. But the ending is still sad, when you think of what Ishi endured and how little time he had in his hard, hard life to enjoy things. I kept imagining the things I would show Ishi if I had the chance: Disneyland; a Rolling Stones concert; a Benny Hill video, lasagna, a motorcycle ride.

He only spoke about 600 English words by the end, but you will understand him very well. And, I'm confident, he will be someone you deeply respect.

Ishi in Two Worlds
By Albqdane
This is an excellent and significant book. I have replaced it a couple of times over the years, because it doesn't always come back when lent out. This particular hardbound edition from U of California Press 1976 is the best I have owned with many more and sharper photos and at over 7x10 inches a well designed layout.
As for the context - well, this is the real life story of when the Stone Age meets the sharp edge of the Industrial Age and all the tragedy mass humanity can bring upon the land. It is also the true story of how knowledge and our better character can bridge those worlds... You won't regret this read, it stays with you.

An anthropologist on Mars
By Marco Costanzi
At the beginning of the 20th century a half-starved 50-year-old Indian was found in a remote farm in California. He was the last surving Yaki Indian. Before the arrival of white settlers there had been probably more than 2000 Indians of that tribe in the area. They were wiped out in less than 80 years by the diseases carried by europeans, the reduction of their natural environment and periodical retaliatory expeditions organized by band of vigilantes to revenge a stolen cow or horse or the killing of one white settler. The last surviving Yaki was lucky enough to be "adopted" by the curators of the Museum of Berkeley University. There the Indian lived happily for 5 years, working as janitor and a sort of living exhibit. The anthropologist studied him and his world, and he studied the world of whites, showing a remarkable degree of adaptability to modern American society. He was called Ishi (=man) by the staff of the museum because he always refused to say his own name. Loved by everybody and friend of everybody, he died of the tubercolosis that his natural defence did not recognize. The story was written 50 years after his death by the daughter of the museum's director through the notes of her father (she had never met Ishi). Even being a perfectly scientific book, it has the power of moving of a novel and contains a terrible caveat for the modern man.

Amazon.com Review
We'll obviously never know what would have happened if Elvis Presley's twin brother hadn't been stillborn. Perhaps companionship wouldn't have fostered Elvis' creative side, maybe the two would have been sensations as the Presley Brothers, or any of a number of scenarios. By contrast, Peter Whitmer advances the notion that Presley's status as a "twinless twin" was a defining characteristic in the superstar's life. It drew him inexorably close to his mother, a relationship which shadowed his every move. Whitmer offers a bank of statistical evidence to his point and supplies an unusual look at one of our culture's most examined but misunderstood figures.

From Publishers Weekly
The central argument of this dicey Elvis bio (which, at least in the galley, misspells Presley's middle name throughout) is that the defining moment in the King's 42 years was the death at birth of his twin brother, Jesse. That psychological wound, contends clinical psychologist Whitmer (When the Going Gets Weird, about Hunter S. Thompson), shaped Elvis's life. Perhaps; but what is certain is that this book has personality problems of its own. While Whitmer hews doggedly to his central thesis, he is, ironically, at his best when the text reads as a straightforward life and times, offering detailed accounts of such subjects as rural Southern culture, Elvis's film career and his lurid decline. When the book returns explicitly to its main theme, however, it seems too insistent, even grasping; an argument about Elvis's androgynous appeal is backed up by no less an authority than Phyllis Diller. Ultimately, readers' responses to this book may depend on whether they believe that this author, or anyone for that matter, can accurately diagnose the psychopathology of someone he's never met, and whether they find illuminating or foolhardy such statements as: "To fully understand the emotional turmoil Elvis would suffer throughout his forty-two years, it is necessary to begin in utero...." While more nuanced and compassionate than Albert Goldman's hatchet job, this bio hasn't usurped Peter Guralnick's more rounded and better-written Last Train to Memphis as the definitive portrait of an American icon. From Library Journal
Whitmer, a clinical psychologist and writer, tries to delve into the inner psyche of Elvis to better understand the American icon. He uses the twinless twin concept as his central theme, contending that throughout his life an incomplete Elvis searched for his twin brother, Jesse, who died at birth. Whitmer also argues that Elvis suffered from a dysfunctional family: his overprotective mother, Gladys, who refused to let Elvis mature naturally; his shiftless father, Vernon, who spent part of Elvis's formative years in prison and failed to provide a strong male role model; and manager Tom Parker, who assumed Gladys's role upon her death. The author asserts that these psychological factors and family dynamics led an alienated Elvis to eating disorders, excessive dependence, sexual abnormalities, and his singing, which acted as a form of therapy. Though presenting interesting background information, Whitmer delivers a sensationalist psychohistory that leaps from threads of fact to outlandish, unsubstantiated psychological theories. Such wild assertions build the Elvis legend but do not explain the man. Not recommended.?David Szatmary, Univ. of Washington, Seattle

A Fascinating Read
By A Customer
I read this book AFTER reading the 2 book biography of Elvis by Peter Guralnick and I think that is how best to read this. While Guralnick gives the 'definative' story of Elvis and what happened to him, I think "The Inner Elvis" explains the WHY of it all. There is in this book the 'missing link' the explanation of why, and how Elvis was so affected by the early years of his life and the psychological effects of such things as his mother's over protection "enmeshment", his dead twin brother amongst other things. This book, I found, was a fascinating read but if you haven't read the full biography of Elvis' life and were looking for it here then there's a lot of detail missing, but that isn't what the author intended, I believe. His point and explanations are very well made & I rate this a 5 star read.

Interesting perspective but sometimes far fetched
By Roy F. Johnson
A different and valuable analysis of Elvis Presley presenting the basis for his behavior in later life. I found a great deal of it plausible and very helpful in my understanding of the man. However, much of the reasoning seemed contorted and overextended with rambling, sometimes disjointed and overworked passages. It was like listening to Allen Greenspan before a congressional committee. I felt that the author made some conflicting statements. Most difficult for me to accept was the degree to which Elvis's life was supposedly shaped by the death of his twin at birth. But then I'm no psychologist.

The "Why" Of Elvis Explained
By Sonya
This is a great work not to be missed, for those looking for exceptional insight and value into Elvis's world.

The analysis of "Twinless Twins" was priceless in its value at showing who Elvis was as a person, and I had to call home to see if I had been a twinless twin myself, since I have felt many of those same feelings (other than having my long standing invisible friend revisited, mom said no...).

The Inner Elvis takes the reader into how the closeness of being twins in the womb can change a person forever, even when they grow up distanced from their twin by death or physical separation.

Add to that a mother who was unable to cope with the loss of one son and the abuse of a wayward husband. She heaped the love and the fears of their spartan early existence onto the one son remaining.

Combining all of this offers a fascinating read into Elvis' motivations.

I did take some objection to the author's obvious atheistic viewpoint, as God was very real to Elvis, his mom and also to me, and He isn't some crutch to the weak masses as Peter likes to put forth here. But, Peter, like everyone, will find that out for himself one day too.

All in all though, The Inner Elvis is a worthwhile read for the "why's" about Elvis. I always wondered why Elvis didn't stand up and tell the near-criminal Colonel Tom Parker to shove off in the 60's when the incredibly selfish and controlling manager forever damaged Elvis' movie career potential, and now I know. It was Elvis' fatal flaw, now understood a bit better.

RIP Elvis, you were a wonderful, warm and brilliantly gifted man who shared his talents and love with the world. You left the world so much better for having been in it. And, say Hi to Jessie Garon for me.

From an award-winning author comes a wise and tender coming-of-age story about a nine-year-old girl who runs away from her Mississippi home in 1963, befriends a lonely woman suffering loss and abuse, and embarks on a life-changing roadtrip.

Whistling past the graveyard. That’s what Daddy called it when you did something to keep your mind off your most worstest fear. . . .

In the summer of 1963, nine-year-old Starla Claudelle runs away from her strict grandmother’s Mississippi home. Starla’s destination is Nashville, where her mother went to become a famous singer, abandoning Starla when she was three. Walking a lonely country road, Starla accepts a ride from Eula, a black woman traveling alone with a white baby. Now, on the road trip that will change her life forever, Starla sees for the first time life as it really is—as she reaches for a dream of how it could one day be.

The South on the eve of the civil rights movement, as seen through the eyes of this novel’s plucky nine-year-old narrator. Starla Claudelle lives in Mississippi with her stern grandma. Her daddy is away working on an oil rig. Her mama has gone to Nashville to be a star, so Starla decides to head there when she gets herself in trouble one too many times. She’s offered a ride by a black woman named Eula, who has with her a white baby found abandoned on the steps of a church. Eula takes Starla and the baby home, but violence forces them back on the road with no money and a truck about to break down. During their long and sometimes perilous trip, Starla sees firsthand what it’s like to be the wrong color in a segregated society, and her keen sense of injustice and need for love help her create a bond with Eula that transcends any barriers. It’s not easy to keep such a young narrator convincing for more than 300 pages, and for the most part, author Crandall manages it well. Readers will take to Starla and be caught up in her story. --Mary Ellen Quinn

Review
"A coming-of-age story as well as a luminous portrait of courage and the bonds of friendship. . . Susan Crandall tells young Starla’s story with pitch-perfect tone, evoking 1963 Mississippi and its struggles with a deft hand. I laughed and cried at Starla’s keen observances of life and family and the sometimes blurred edges of justice. Like Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and Kathryn Stockett’s The Help, Whistling Past the Graveyard is destined to become a classic.” (New York Times bestselling author Karen White)

It’s not easy to keep such a young narrator convincing for more than 300 pages... Readers will take to Starla and be caught up in her story. (Mary Ellen Quinn Booklist)

“Crandall delivers big with a coming-of-age story set in Mississippi in 1963 and narrated by a precocious 9-year-old…Young Starla is an endearing character whose spirited observations propel this nicely crafted story.” (Kirkus)

We all have our own way of Whistling Past the Graveyard... loved this book
By Chattykat
"My daddy says that when you do somethin' to distract you from your worstest fears, it's like whistlin' past the graveyard. You know, making a racket to keep the scaredness and the ghosts away. He says that's how we get by sometimes."

"I thought about how me and Eula finding out each other's secrets had made us both better, and how we both had our own way of whistling past the graveyard."

These two quotes pretty much sum up this wonderful story of a little white girl growing up in South Mississippi in the sixties when racism in the deep south was rearing it's ugly head. I had many thoughts as I was reading this book and the two that came to surface most often was how people often treat children as if they are invisible. And, the dangers of keeping secrets and the damage they can cause. That was Starla... she didn't know it but she was surrounded by secrets and these secrets sent her on a wild goose chase to Nashville to fulfill a dream. Starla felt invisible to everyone around her and had come to believe that she was un-loved, un-wanted and not special... just nothing but trouble. She lived on the dreams that most children have when important things are missing from their lives... like loving parents, siblings and the feeling of being special, needed and important. So, when things hit bottom (at least her idea of bottom)she did what any un-wanted kid had to do... she ran away. On her way to Nashville she meets a colored woman named Eula. As they travel Eula teaches Starla that she has gifts, that she is special and most of all she is loved. Starla and Eula begin to need each other, lean on each other and love each other as family.
Starla learns some valuable and often frightening life lessons on this journey that will inevitably change her forever. She learns that reality quite often bears no resemblance to the dream. And, that people are not always who or what they seem to be. But, most importantly, that we must see beyond the color of someones skin. Ugly comes in all shades!
I loved Starla... she was a red headed spit fire of a girl who had a mouth for trouble but a heart of gold. She was a very misunderstood child mostly because her mouth was always one step ahead of her mind. But, every now and then it worked in her favor.

I truly enjoyed this book... highly recommend!

Whistling Past The Graveyard Review
By Patrice Hoffman
Let's get that I absolutely LOVE this book out of the way. Whistling Past The Graveyard is a heartwarming, endearing coming of age story about a fiesty 9 year old girl who decides it's high time she flew the coop in an effort not to be sent to boarding school. It's the summer of 1963 in Cayuga Springs, the Fourth of July, and a pocket full of penny candy that puts the wheels in motion for a life-changing experience for two unsuspecting lives that intersect on an abandoned road.

Whistling Past The Graveyard is narrated by Starla who's often described by her grandmother Mamie as a girl who can't stay out of trouble. Starla's personality is as red as her hair and Mamie does not for a second allow Starla to forget that she's a stone's throw from being just like her mother. Mamie is probably one of the characters I like the least but it's probably also because I only have Starla's point of view in her assessment. Not long into Starla's jailbreak she meets Eula, a colored woman with a set of her own problems.

Susan Crandall does an excellent job at so many things in this novel such as character development, being true to the era, and all the things we love and hate about the south. Starla and Eula are an unlikely pair being their race differences as well as age differences. Starla is not afraid of anything and even when she is she doesn't back down. Eula on the other hand has been treated poorly her whole life. They both compliment and complete each other and give the other what they both need most. I love their relationship and readers will appreciate it as well. Crandall really captures what it friendship and family mean.

A lot of blurbs are comparing this novel to the bestseller The Help and I don't think that's a fair assessment. Not that this book isn't on the same level but because I find Whistling Past The Graveyard to be more true to the 60s than The Help. Crandall doesn't sacrifice the tension or danger of the 60s to make for a more sugar-coated, easier pill to swallow for the masses. There were moments I was on the edge of my seat hoping that things would be all right for our two heroines. The only similarities between the two works are the race of the narrators and the period they were written in.

I will say one last time I LOVE Whistling Past The Graveyard. It's about friendship, family, and seeing the just and unjust in life. I recommend this book to lovers of fiction and especially to those who love coming of age stories. Whistling Past The Graveyard reaffirms that in some cases, blood isn't thicker than water.

A narrative still worth teaching...
By Book Preview Review
Book Description:

"In the summer of 1963, nine-year-old Starla Claudelle runs away from her grandmother's Mississippi home. Starla's destination is Nashville, where her mother went to become a famous singer, abandoning Starla when she was three. Walking a lonely country road, Starla accepts a ride from Eula, a black woman traveling alone with a white baby. Now, on the road trip that will changer her life forever, Starla sees for the first time life as it really is---as she reaches for a dream of how it could one day be."

A heartbreaking yet heartwarming, well written and easy to read coming of age story that illustrates the bonds and loyalties that stem from friendships and what truly makes a "real" family despite blood ties. I couldn't help but be captivated with Starla from the get-go. Her stubbornness, sass, feistiness and sheer determination had me rooting for her from page one. The story flows so easily that I could see the events unfolding clearly in my mind. At times, her one-liners were downright comical, further expressing her unblemished prejudices and adolescence.

One gets a glimpse of what life must have been like in the South with segregation and the early civil rights movement. One knows or has learned what it was like by adult standards, but a fresh new glimpse is told through the eyes of a child. Her child like point of view gives a much more simplistic, innocent and naïve understanding of the social issues and inequalities during those times. I loved her fierceness and how at such a young age she was so determined to speak her mind and stand up for what she felt was right. She was smart beyond her years and unfortunately grew up ever too quickly. She learned hard life lessons at such a young age. A narrative still worth teaching today.

Since it was first published in 1983, The Atlantic Crossing Guide has established itself as the standard reference for any sailor planning an Atlantic passage. It is packed with advice on choosing and equipping a suitable boat, navigation, safety, and port details. No other book presents such a wide range of practical information, or fills such a genuine need. The third edition has been revised to reflect the continuing development of cruising yachts and their gear, as well as the many changes in shoreside facilities. The section on passages and landfalls has been expanded and is illustrated by many new charts. More ports than ever before are included, each with a harbor map.

An Excellent Reference
By Steve Wolfer
Having made an Atlantic crossing myself on a 34 foot sloop (Trade-wind route) I can say that the information in this book is right on target. The authors know their subject well. I'd recommend this book for both planning an Atlantic crossing and to carry with you during the passage. Some of the small boat anchorages described won't be found on your regular charts.

The Eloquent Essay: An Anthology of Classic & Creative NonfictionFrom Paw Prints 2008-06-26

A concise anthology of superb classic and creative nonfiction from the twentieth century.

This anthology of seventeen modern essays shows the form at its most varied and dramatic. Purposefully concise, it gathers together exemplars of the personal narrative, the argument, the anecdotal essay, digressive discourse, the "open letter," and others. Some of the most engaging authors of our time write on subjects as diverse as becoming a doctor, cattle grazing rights, the death of Socrates, Anne Frank, computer culture, and how to detect "baloney" in all the verbiage that surrounds us.

Included in the collection are essays by George Orwell, W. H. Auden, Bruno Bettelheim, Eudora Welty, Martin Luther King Jr., Joan Didion, Edward Abbey, Leo Marx, I. F. Stone, Pico Iyer, Amy Tan, Lewis Thomas, Barbara Kingsolver, Ann S. Causey, Carl Sagan, Ellen Ullman, and Opal Palmer Adisa. Arranged in chronological order, each selection begins with a note about the author and the essay that follows. The introduction discusses the history of the essay form and the reasons for its special vitality.

The Eloquent Essay engages the intellect and the passions, and offers the general reader the pleasures of cogent written discourse. At the same time, its carefully selected essays―each one superbly written and accessible―are well suited to study and discussion.

From Library Journal
Loughery, a teacher at the Nightingale-Bamford School in New York and a Pulitzer Prize finalist, has selected 17 American and English essays to demonstrate the vitality and variety of this genre. He includes pieces by George Orwell, W.H. Auden, Eudora Welty, Martin Luther King, and Lewis Thomas, among others. In one memorable essay, Bruno Bettelheim argues that Anne's family brought disaster upon themselves by their determination to ignore reality and live as if things were normal. In another, Leo Marx considers the Huckleberry Finn controversy, concluding that teachers are best qualified to decide if their students should read Huck, because they know "their own ability to convey, and their students' ability to grasp, the irony that informs every word of this matchless comic novel." Carl Sagan talks about detecting baloney, while Barbara Kingsolver claims that she became an author because of the Dewey Decimal system. Each essay is preceded by a brief biographical sketch. Filled with humor, seriousness, skill in writing, and meaningful subjects, this collection is recommended for academic or public libraries where interest warrants.
