The Purposeful Graduate: Why Colleges Must Talk to Students about Vocation, by Tim Clydesdale

We all know that higher education has changed dramatically over the past two decades. Historically a time of exploration and self-discovery, the college years have been narrowed toward an increasingly singular goal—career training—and college students these days forgo the big questions about who they are and how they can change the world and instead focus single-mindedly on their economic survival. In The Purposeful Graduate, Tim Clydesdale elucidates just what a tremendous loss this is, for our youth, our universities, and our future as a society. At the same time, he shows that it doesn’t have to be this way: higher education can retain its higher cultural role, and students with a true sense of purpose—of personal, cultural, and intellectual value that cannot be measured by a wage—can be streaming out of every one of its institutions.

The key, he argues, is simple: direct, systematic, and creative programs that engage undergraduates on the question of purpose. Backing up his argument with rich data from a Lilly Endowment grant that funded such programs on eighty-eight different campuses, he shows that thoughtful engagement of the notion of vocational calling by students, faculty, and staff can bring rich rewards for all those involved: greater intellectual development, more robust community involvement, and a more proactive approach to lifelong goals. Nearly every institution he examines—from internationally acclaimed research universities to small liberal arts colleges—is a success story, each designing and implementing its own program, that provides students with deep resources that help them to launch flourishing lives.

Flying in the face of the pessimistic forecast of higher education’s emaciated future, Clydesdale offers a profoundly rich alternative, one that can be achieved if we simply muster the courage to talk with students about who they are and what they are meant to do.

A Compelling Case for Purpose
By Tim
The vast majority of recent critiques challenging the value, effectiveness, and relevance of higher education have ignored the central question. One need not dig deeply before being struck by the realization that few critics are attending to the real heart of the matter, namely, “what is the purpose of higher education?” Tim Clydesdale’s in his very well conceived, researched, and written book, The Purposeful Graduate: Why Colleges Must Talk to Students about Vocation, not only attends to this important question in a compelling manner but addresses the incredibly high stakes of failing to help our students construct lives of meaning and purpose. Clearly he makes the case that “purpose matters” and must once again become central to the work of the academy.

In the same manner that Clydesdale’s earlier work, The First Year Out: Understanding American Teens after High School helped us to see how challenging life circumstances impact students’ developmental progress, in this volume he helps us to see how, by engaging our students with questions of purpose, we can help them to live lives that matter and that contribute to the greater good. Clydesdale work in The Purposeful Graduate makes another impressive contribution to the academy that will leave readers looking forward to seeing what’s next.

essential for vocation program directors and other campus ministers
By Jeremiah Gibbs
Clydesdale argues that higher education has drifted from the lofty aim of forming students for civic engagement and for the good of the world to answer student and parent demand for employability. The course correction needed has already been tried and shown to be trustworthy according to Clydesdale. Intentional and sustained engagement with questions of purpose and meaning will redirect higher education toward its core mission while also improving student morale, increasing persistence, and reenergizing educators.

Clydesdale received a grant to study the outcomes of the Programs for the Theological Exploration of Vocation (PTEV), an eight-year, 88 campus, $225 million initiative of Lilly Endowment Inc (LEI). After an introductory chapter, the book explains the kinds of campuses that participated and the kinds of programs developed, with special attention to practical questions of which campus environments are best suited as well as the best practices they employed. Two chapters focus on outcomes for students and then outcomes for faculty and staff. The final two chapters make suggestions about how to develop programs based on the best practices discovered and how to identify fit with institutional culture.

If you read only one book on purpose exploration with students...
By Kelly Soif
This books speaks directly to what I have been doing with students for the last several years and want to see higher ed pursue on a much larger scale. Clydesdale provides a tremendous balance of anecdotal evidence with true research; on top of that, he also provides inspiration for the whole field of "purpose exploration." He also gives excellent SPECIFICS regarding the various ways to run these programs in productive and engaging ways. This book is highly readable, practical, and motivating.

Italoamericana: The Literature of the Great Migration, 1880-1943From Fordham University Press

The highly-anticipated first English-language edition of the monumental critical anthology of writings from the golden age of the Italian disapora in America is now available.

To appreciate the life of the Italian immigrant enclave from the great heart of the Italian migration to its settlement in America requires that one come to know how these immigrants saw their communities as colonies of the mother country. Edited with extraordinary skill, Italoamericana: The Literature of the Great Migration, 1880-1943 brings to an English-speaking audience a definitive collection of classic writings on, about, and from the formative years of the Italian-American experience.

Originally published in Italian, this landmark collection of translated writings establishes a rich, diverse, and mature sense of Italian-American life by allowing readers to see American society through the eyes of Italian-speaking immigrants. Filled with the voices from the first generation of Italian-American life, the book presents a unique treasury of long-inaccessible writing that embodies a literary canon for Italian-American culture--poetry, drama, journalism, political advocacy, history, memoir, biography, and story--the greater part of which has never before been translated.

Italoamericana introduces a new generation of readers to the "Black Hand" and the organized crime of the 1920s, the incredible "pulp" novels by Bernardino Ciambelli, Paolo Pallavicini, Italo Stanco, Corrado Altavilla, the exhilarating "macchiette" by Eduardo Migliaccio (Farfariello) and Tony Ferrazzano, the comedies by Giovanni De Rosalia, Riccardo Cordiferro's dramas and poems, the poetry of Fanny Vanzi-Mussini and Eduardo Migliaccio.

Edited by a leading journalist and scholar, Italoamericana introduces an important but little-known, largely inaccessible Italian-language literary heritage that defined the Italian-American experience. Organized into five sections--"Annals of the Great Exodus," "Colonial Chronicles," "On Stage (and Off-Stage)," "Anarchists, Socialist, Fascists, Anti-Fascists," and "Apocalyptic Integrated / Integrated Apocalyptic Intellectuals"--the volume distinguishes a literary, cultural, and intellectual history that engages the reader in all sorts of archaeological and genealogical work.

Review

"Robert Viscusi's American edition of Francesco Durante's anthology fills an enormous gap in Italian and Italian American studies. This is the first English-language edition of a collection of journalistic, literary and critical texts to offer deep and sweeping insight into the social lives and psychology of Italian immigrants up to the watershed years of World War II."-George Guida, New York City College of Technology, The City University of New York and President of the Italian American Studies Association

"Italoamericana is a supreme work of scholarship-an archive unto itself in the form of a meticulously researched and scrupulously glossed and documented historical anthology of the literary creation of the Italian migration."-Pellegrino D'Acierno, Hofstra University

"A sophisticated, critical look at the writings of Italian immigrants to America across all genres. . . This volume is a major work and forms an invaluable testament to a forgotten era of Italian literary history in the new world. . . A massive work of extraordinary power, that while scholarly and comprehensive, will have wide appeal."--Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

" . . . [A] kaleidoscopic, thousand-page anthology of memoirs, poetry, political commentary and newspaper excerpts . . ."--Sam Roberts, The New York Times

"This volume is a comprehensive compilation of writings by Italian American authors. First published in Italy, edited by journalist and literary scholar Durante, the anthology covers the mass migration of Italians to the United States up to World War II. . . VERDICT Highly recommended for anyone interested in immigrant literature and an essential purchase for any collection of Italian American literature and culture."--Morris Hounion, New York City College of Technology, Brooklyn, Library Journal

"This massive anthology rings out with the voices of legions of Italians and Italian Americans over six decades. From it flows their poetry, drama, stories, memories, novels, speeches, oral histories and more."--Doce Italiana

"In its girth, the volume is a metaphorical feast, suggesting both the collective heft of the rediscovered output and the unique works still waiting to be discovered. . . highly recommended." -Choice

"It is not an exaggeration to characterize this work as monumental, not only for the large number of original sources it includes in its nearly one thousand pages but also for its variety and organization." -Italian American Review

"Italoamericana spotlights, through a broad variety of literary work, the distinct culture and history of Italian Americans, while showing the universality of the immigrant story. It should find a place in every Italian American household, as a touchstone to a reality few of us know anything about."-Feile-Festa

Italoamericana Vol. II - Finally in English: the Italian migration in the words of those who lived it. - a great read
By Richard Mattiaccio
This English rendition of Volume II of Francesco Durante's extraordinary anthology of the writings of the Italians in America from the 1880's to World War II is a revelation to anyone interested in the language, intellectual life, literature, performance culture and social perspectives of the people of the "Italian colony" during its sudden expansion. The book also happens to be fun to read: sometimes tragic, sometimes comic, sometimes ironic, never dull. The size of the volume might be a little off-putting to the casual reader, but it can and should be read in discrete, relatively brief sittings, author by author. Durante's introduction of each author places the writings in context and brings them and the Italian colony to life. Shouts of "Bravi" are due for the publisher, the editors and translators who have made available in modern yet faithful English the idiosyncratic Italian of the original texts. Italoamericana Volume II stands out as an important contribution to a more nuanced understanding of the Italian immigrant experience in the United States. It might well also provide insights into immigration in more general terms. Anyone who starts reading this book will wonder when we can have a translation of Volume I, the writings of Italians in America from the beginnings of the United States until the period covered by this volume. Ben venga!

A great source for the curious but definitely "dry" unless you ...
By Ms Marilyn L. Shaw Esq.
If you are of Italian descent, this book will answer/explain a whole lot of questions and mysteries you may have grown up with, such as, why we knew so little about our heritage, were not taught the language, what experiences our ancestors were silent about, etc. The book is quite a find as it was written in Italian by Italian authors who read many original sources, including newspapers written in the States addressed to the immigrant community. A great source for the curious but definitely "dry" unless you are interested in understanding the Italian immigrant experience which our ancestors never talked about.

The Man Who Killed Kennedy: The Case Against LBJ, by Roger Stone

The sensational New York Times bestseller, now in paperback.

Find out how and why LBJ had JFK assassinated.

The Man Who Killed Kennedy: The Case Against LBJ hit the New York Times bestseller list the week of the 50th Anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Consummate political insider Roger Stone makes a compelling case that Lyndon Baines Johnson had the motive, means, and opportunity to orchestrate the murder of JFK. Stone maps out the case that LBJ blackmailed his way on the ticket in 1960 and was being dumped in 1964 to face prosecution for corruption at the hands of his nemesis attorney Robert Kennedy. Stone uses fingerprint evidence and testimony to prove JFK was shot by a long-time LBJ hit man—not Lee Harvey Oswald.

President Johnson would use power from his personal connections in Texas, from the criminal underworld, and from the United States government to escape an untimely end in politics and to seize even greater power. President Johnson, the thirty-sixth president of the United States, was the driving force behind a conspiracy to murder President Kennedy on November 22, 1963.

In The Man Who Killed Kennedy, you will find out how and why he did it.

Legendary political operative and strategist Roger Stone has gathered documents and uses his firsthand knowledge to construct the ultimate tome to prove that LBJ was not only involved in JFK’s assassination, but was in fact the mastermind.

Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. Stone is known for his hardball tactics, deep opposition research, biting candor, and love of English custom tailoring. Stone serves as mens fashion correspondent for the Daily Caller.

Lyndon Johnson murdered JFK: Nixon, Goldwater, KGB all knew it
By Robert P. Morrow
This book is a perfect Christmas gift for anyone with an interest in American history or politics. It also makes a perfect Halloween gift for anyone affiliated with the LBJ Library, particularly Tom Johnson who channels the ghost of Jack Valenti, the longtime LBJ sychophant, who was letting his wife sleep with Lyndon Johnson.

Roger Stone has definitely made a fine contribution to the historical record of the JFK assassination with this effort. #1 he tells you that Richard Nixon immediately knew who Jack Ruby was the moment he saw him shoot Oswald on TV on 11/24/63 just 48 hours after the JFK assassination.

Nixon recognized Jack Ruby as a "Lyndon Johnson man" from the 1940's who LBJ had place on the HUAC committee as a paid informant. That one blockbuster nugget is worth the price of admission for this book.

It proves LBJ was using one of his mafia goons to do some "clean up" work on the JFK assassination so that the posthumous and now discredited "blame it all on Oswald" canard could begin, conveniently leaving LBJ and his Texas oil men out of the picture.

Stone indicts four groups in the JFK assassination: Lyndon Johnson, LBJ's Dallas, TX oil men, the mafia especially Carlos Marcello and the CIA.

My only quibble with that is I think Air Force generals Curtis LeMay and most especially Gen. Edward Lansdale were key players in the JFK assassination. I think both Allen Dulles (CIA and fired by JFK) and J. Edgar Hoover (so close to LBJ) were perps as well. Cuba policy, more so than Vietnam, was a big reason for the JFK assassination, especially among those folks doing the actual firing and shooting.
There is high quality material in Roger Stone's book that is nowhere else in JFK literature. It is a MUST-READ for any student of American history and politics.

At this point I feel compelled to let you know what pure and utter b_____t many of the elite American historians and political commentators are feeding you on the JFK assassination. People such as Chris Matthews, Bill O'Reilly, Larry Sabato, Robert Caro, Robert Dallek, George Will, Michael Barone, Rachel Maddow, Michael Beschloss, Evan Thomas: these people are the moral and intellectual equivalents of Holocaust deniers.

It really is both frightening and disgusting to witness the lies or the spectacular ignorance that is spouted by these high profile commentators on the JFK assassination. They don't know their asses from a hole in the wall about American history, politics or the biggest event in modern American history. The JFK assassination was bigger than 9/11 because it *really was* an inside job. It was an orderly transfer of power to the murderer, but a coup d'etat none the less.

Listening to Matthews, O'Reilly, Caro, Dallek and Sabato spout the Big Lie that a lone nut commie killed JFK is about like listening to David Duke tell me what happened with the Holocaust.

Roger Stone gives you the truth and the inside skinny - appalling as it is; it is also much more interesting and satisfying to truth seekers.

Lyndon Johnson was a vicious, evil man. Not only was he a murderer, he was a serial murderer and a man who can be fairly described as a "functional lunatic" with a hatred of the Kennedys with the intensity of a 100 suns.

Roy Cohn and Tony "Fats" Salerno of the Genovese mafia family (ties to LBJ buddy Clint Murchison) told Stone "LBJ and the mafia - Carlos Marcello" did it. Killed JFK, that is.

Texas attorney general Waggoner Carr told John Mitchell - LBJ did it.
Henry Cabot Lodge: Nixon's VP candidate in 1960 and JFK's ambassador to Vietnam: LBJ, CIA and mafia murdered JFK.

Roger Stone in his youth was very close to the Lodge family and found this out through John Davis Lodge, the brother of Henry Cabot Lode.

Roger Stone brings all this new material to the historical record of JFK literature.
Stone reveals for the first time that not only was Richard Nixon convinced that Lyndon Johnson murdered John Kennedy, but both Barry Goldwater and the KGB came to the same conclusion. Nixon's moment of revelation came on November 24th 1963 as he watched Jack Ruby, in yet another LBJ-directed murder, kill Oswald. Nixon immediately recognized Ruby as a "Johnson man" and a paid informant for the House Un-American Activities Committee from the 1940's.

A controversial book that deserves to be read by everyone
By Vince Palamara
Authors Craig Zirbel, Barr McClellan, and Philip Nelson, among others, have bravely tackled the LBJ-did-it aspect of the JFK assassination story beforehand, yet no one hits you straight between the eyes with authority and bravado like Roger Stone. A true insider with an incredible pedigree, Stone is to be commended for taking the literature to another level that will make "official history" authors such as Robert Caro and Robert Dallek stand up and take notice.

This book came with a lot of "hype" and a lot of "buzz"- many months of articles, news columns, and the like have generated tremendous interest in Stone's book. The wait was well worth it. I highly recommend that everyone with an interest in history and politics purchase this fine book asap- you will not be disappointed!

LBJ would be mortified and, quite frankly, that is a very good thing. BUY THIS BOOK!

The man who "killed" LBJ...
By Oudman 71
There is a case to be made about LBJ and his role in the Kennedy Assassination, but I'm not sure this book makes the case. We are told that Roger Stone is a Washington insider of the first order. The back jacket of the book has comments like 'Notorious', and 'The most dangerous man in America...' without reference to any particular book. Apparently, Mr. Stone wants to appear fearsome to his readers. The inside flap shows a dapper man in a fashionable suit with a quizzical smile, and informs us that he also writes a 'Ten best and worst dressed' column for the Huffington Post.

I checked this book out of the library, so I do not own it. I'm still reading it, but I'm not sure if I'm going to finish it or not. It reads not so much like history, or even conspiracy theory, but like the all-time motherload of salacious Washington gossip relevant to the era. No one escapes unscathed. Bobby Kennedy is a ruthless short-tempered crusader alienating and sidelining professionals in the Pentagon and the White House with reckless abandon. John Kennedy is a sex-crazed diseased hypochondriac whose rise (due to the nefarious dealings of his mobster father) manages to make an enemy of nearly everyone on capitol hill in 1960, and Johnson...

Goodness. Where do I start? A homicidal maniac? A penis-twirling neanderthal of the first order, a slavering cut-throat murderer, embezzler, extortioner and lecher to rival Shakespeare's worst villains, but without a single redeeming quality. I'm trying to think if there is a calumny not leveled at LBJ by Roger Stone.

Throughout the first few chapters we are treated to snatches of dialogue, anecdotes and pronouncements by our intrepid insider that give unimpeachable weight to his case, that LBJ killed Kennedy for political gain. State Department briefs, secret conversations, wire-taps, confidences all combine to form a damning and relentless condemnation of the Texas Senator. But a quick look at the notes to these chapters reveals that the source for these quotes is nearly always not the original document cited, but yet another Assassination book written by a prior author. In some cases, Stone quotes journalists and writers directly, as though a reporter reporting on an investigation somehow constitutes 'evidence.' And these citations are from books with titles like 'Bad Blood' and 'Troubled Brothers,' so that what emerges is a kind of echo chamber of accusations floating without substantiation. If one is going to go on record as citing a White House Press Release, or a Department of Justice brief, or a Pentagon memo, why not cite the original source? Why cite yet another author? It's disingenuous to say the least, and certainly doesn't constitute scholarship.

Not that the book gives any impression of scholarship. Mixed in with the blizzard of damning and cryptic quotes from across the political spectrum, many of the most salacious claims burst suddenly on the reader without any reference at all, so that an injudicious reader might actually believe all of this is as reliable as it appears to be.

I began the book sympathetic to the idea that LBJ indeed plotted against Kennedy. I believe there is evidence to that effect. But if there is a definitive case to be made on that head, this is not the book that makes the case. It's so mean-spirited, so callously unfeeling in exposition, so disorganized and vindictive that one leaves off feeling soiled by the experience.

LBJ might well be the villain Stone claims him to be, but the method of the book, the tone of its expose, and the mixture of rumor, gossip and hearsay with genuine evidence so damages the author's stated intent, that he winds up foiling his argument. In the end, what we're left with is a hatchet job, a (one must conclude) politically motivated character assassination intended to leave no nuance left for the reputation of LBJ.

Frankincense the GoTo Essential Oil!
By JAY
In recent years I have become obsessed with the scent of the essential Oil, Frankincense and after reading this sweet little book, I now know why! The book talks strictly about Frankincense, its history, the making of it, and its use as an outstanding essential oil... It is truly an amazing essential oil and really does smell Divine... I often wondered why it was given to Jesus by the three Wise Men at the time of his birth... I now know why. This book was valuable in explaining its use and its importance to humanity... It is truly the GoTo essential oil of the times... and from what I have read in the book, of all time... Get the book if you Love Frankincense, it is worth it!
Blessings, JAY

Florentine Codex: Book 11: Book 11: Earthly Things (Monographs of the School of American Re), by Bernardino de Sahagun

Two of the world’s leading scholars of the Aztec language and culture have translated Sahagún’s monumental and encyclopedic study of native life in Mexico at the time of the Spanish Conquest. This immense undertaking is the first complete translation into any language of Sahagún’s Nahuatl text, and represents one of the most distinguished contributions in the fields of anthropology, ethnography, and linguistics.

Written between 1540 and 1585, the Florentine Codex (so named because the manuscript has been part of the Laurentian Library’s collections since at least 1791) is the most authoritative statement we have of the Aztecs’ lifeways and traditions—a rich and intimate yet panoramic view of a doomed people.

The Florentine Codex is divided by subject area into twelve books and includes over 2,000 illustrations drawn by Nahua artists in the sixteenth century.

Book Eleven is a beautifully written and careful documentation of all of the animals and plants known to the Aztecs in the sixteenth century. As the volume with the most illustrations, Earthly Things allows the reader to look at the natural world through the eyes of the Aztec.

Review

“Highly recommended for all academic and large public libraries.”—Choice

“A great scholarly enterprise.”—New Mexico Historical Review

“Bringing the knowledge of modern scholarship to bear on their materials, the translators have been able to illuminate many obscurities in the text. The complete series of volumes is a landmark of scholarly achievement.”—The New Mexican

“This publication of Sahagún makes available to scholars and their students alike the original Nahuatl text for comparison with the more easily accessible Spanish text, which is in many places merely an abridgment or précis of the original. A whole series of native sources for the study of Mexican pre-conquest history is now at hand for a field of historical study formerly restricted to a small number of investigators. A whole chapter of the cultural history of early Colonial Mexico is unfolding before us. [The Codex is] an impressive monument to Spanish humanism in the sixteenth-century New World.”—The Hispanic American Historical Review

“Sahagún emerges as the indisputable founder of ethnographic science. The accomplishments of the joint translators, Dibble and Anderson, will surely rank among the greatest achievements of American ethnohistorical scholarship.”—Natural History

The Answer to the Atheist's Handbook, by Richard Wurmbrand

Rev. Wurmbrand languished for fourteen years in Communist prisons. Though beaten and starved, he never broke. Having passed through hell on earth, this courageous Romanian pastor emerged with a burning love for God and his fellow man.

In this remarkable book, conceived while he was in solitary confinement, Wurmbrand demolishes the arguments for atheism as presented by the Soviet Academy of Science in its Atheist's Handbook.

Throughout the Communist world, people who wanted to get ahead had to master The Atheist's Handbook. Its teachings were drilled into children at school. But Wurmbrand demonstrates that the atheist creed leaves more questions unanswered than it professes to settle. On the positive side, he marshals the testimony of artists, musicians, writers, philosophers, scientists, statesmen, and saints--all of whom bear eloquent witness to the reality of God.

With the sparkling sense of humor that helped sustain him through unspeakable sufferings, Wurmbrand tells the story of God's love for us in language anyone can understand. Is there a God? Does He care about man? Can we trust what the Scriptures tell us about Him? Yes, says Rev. Richard Wurmbrand, in a ringing affirmation of faith that comes from the heart--and from the head.
