Hinduja and Patchin excel again! These experts get to the heart of cyber abuse including information from leaders in the field. This book would be helpful for anyone in education as well as parents dealing with raising children in this technological age. The book was useful for me in that I am working on my dissertation. Again, most helpful resource, I recommend.

I am a Ph.D. student and my focus is on cyberbullying. This book was amazing and I recommend it for anyone needing to write a paper or do a project on cyberbullying. There is even two pages which provides references to many studies done on cyberbullying.

Another really great read by Hinduja and Patchin. Cyerbullying Prevention and Response: Expert
Perspectives is a collection works from of some of the most knowledgeable experts in the field of cyberbullying. I enjoyed how the book ranged from explanations of cyberbullying, to how it impacts our youth, and finishing with how we can try to help stop cyberbullying with implementation. While I felt some parts of this book was more difficult to read than their other books, because some of the experts' information was a little too technical for me, the compilation of several author's views on various aspects of cyberbullying was interesting to read and informative. This is a definite must read for anyone studying the topic of cyberbullying.

Well Researched Study of Creative Rituals of Artists

Daily Rituals: How Artists Work by Mason Currey (Editor)

This book is a hard one to review because of what it is. This is a meticulously researched work on the work habits of writers, composers, artists and other creative types. He pulls this information from existing sources, biographies, autobiographies and personal journals. If you are looking for this type of detailed information, than this book easily could merit a five star review. Currey does a great job presenting this information, presumably sifting through mounds of notes, interviews and books to capture the essence of the artists work habits. There are almost 30 pages of footnotes for this book. I took a lot of notes while reading this book and I will post the writing life tidbits out on my twitter feed as #authorfacts in the next few weeks.

In a purely unscientific assessment of these habits, I can present to you a summary of what I learned here:

Artists work first thing in the morning to get it out of the way early so they can go about their day. 113 out of the 161 artists profiled (or 70.2% of them) began work in the morning, and many of the the late-rising artists also began work as one of their first activities of the day in the afternoon or night time, but the overwhelming majority of artists woke in the morning and got to work within 2 hours of waking.

Most of them followed a strict daily work schedule working for a set number of hours, (typically anywhere from 3 to 6 hours) or until they hit a goal word count (usually 1000 to 1500 words).

Many artists drank or smoked to excess, all ultimately having a negative impact on their work. Another popular excess: coffee.

The one thing I wish this book would have done was to interview more contemporary authors, a lot of these artists are dead and from the 19th and early 20th century. Although the book contains some writers from the late 20th Century, the majority of these are of the Baby Boomer generation, and I'd be curious to see the daily rituals of Generation X or Millennial authors, and how they handle the distraction-rich, socially interconnected world of the 21st century. I think this information is out there and available, and maybe even easier to collect and write about, so I was disappointed that this wasn't captured.

I also couldn't figure out how the book was organized. The artists were not classified by the medium or subject area, and not in alphabetical or chronological order. The profiles seem to be completely random, and considering the audience for this book, I think it would have better been served by some sort of organizational structure to make it easier to look up a particular artist, time period or profession.

But the book is what it is. It is a solid, well-researched work of an obscure, somewhat academic subject, and although this is fascinating to a writer such as myself, I'm not sure the book can hold the interest of someone not specifically looking for this type of information, and I'm not sure it could hold the interest of writers and other artists not specifically interested in this aspect of the creative process.

Wonderful book! Should be mandatory reading for anyone in the creative field!

This is a fabulous book! It was a diligent work of love by Mr. Currey over a decade of research and writing.

The key take away for me was that all of these 166 very productive, very creative folks had routines. They were disciplined in their approaches, and they left lasting legacies.

In working with younger artists (and the occasional middle aged artist), I often hear the lament, "I can't produce art on a schedule! The Muse must move me!" This widely held misconception is probably why the word "starving" is so often associated with artists. :-D As moSt musicians will tell you, a knowledge of music theory enhances results.

I love this book. I am ordered several copies for the course I teach on engendering creativity.

This book thrills me for a number of reasons....

I am a writer. Not as prolific as I wish, but still have published a few things. ( Relieving the Burden of Self on Kindle). I have huge issues with discipline and have struggled all my life with getting "down to it." Therefore, I grabbed this book like a life raft the minute I spotted it. Am I glad I did!
I decided to put a number system on each selection to help myself when I go back over it (as I KNOW I will!), for inspiration.
1 is ...ideas I'd never use. 5 is for ideas that seem absolutely perfect for me. I have done tons of underlining on many passages for
multiple reasons. There are "zingers" on nearly every page! (If a book makes me underline, its definitely worth owning.) That's why I buy most books. I can't underline library books.
One idea that was extremely helpful is by Morton Feldman: "...after you write a little bit, stop and then copy it. Because while
you're copying it, you're thinking about it, and its giving you other ideas." He learned this from John Cage. This is a system I will adopt at once!
The book is fun to read: partly history, part biography, part entertainment, but mostly inspirational.
I know that reading Daily Rituals will likely become part of my own Daily Ritual....so I can finally get down to the business
of writing...which is why I got this in the first place.
I think many people would enjoy it, whether or not they were writers, artists, musicians, poets, or movie directors....it provides a voyeur's eye showing the way many different types of people handle self-management.
A truly joyful book!

Amazing Guide

This is great I recommend this to anyone looking to getting to killer shape for anything from ROTC, to Go Ruck , to Ranger school actually have two buddies that breezed through it using this guide. I always use it to stay on the top of my game for ROTC. Also I used after my severely sprained ankle to get back into shape. Basically if you want to excel and be the top dog get this guide.

This is my 4th Stew Smith Book and like all the others it delivers. Others might purchase this for anticipation of attending U.S. Army Ranger Assessment and Selection school. I received it for participation in GORUCK Challenge events, which include a significant amount of rucking, PT, carrying heavy items over long distances for a long period of time, etc. In reviewing the book - Stew covers all of the bases from proper footwear, foot care, preparing your boots and footwear for the duration of the events you will do, etc.

Can't recommend anything from Stew Smith enough - proven results not only for years - but DECADES!

However, it needs to be completely reformatted for an Ebook. As it stands it is nearly indecipherable. Eventually, I will pull out a pen/paper and transcribe it and probably get some good workouts. About the Author

Joseph Romm, Ph.D., is one of the country's most influential communicators on climate science and solutions. Romm is Chief Science Advisor for "Years of Living Dangerously," which won the 2014 Emmy Award for Outstanding Nonfiction Series. He is the founding editor of Climate Progress, which New York Times columnist Tom Friedman called "the indispensable blog." In 2009, Time named him one of its "Heroes of the Environment," calling him "The Web's most influential climate-change blogger." In 2009, Rolling Stone put Romm on its list of 100 "people who are reinventing America." Romm was acting assistant secretary of energy in 1997, where he oversaw $1 billion in low-carbon technology development and deployment. He is a Senior Fellow at American Progress and holds a Ph.D. in physics from MIT.

Brilliant Answers, Clearly Stated, to Essential Questions addressing the existential threat of Climate Change

Joseph Romm, scientist (PhD, MIT), prolific author, recognized expert on valuable clean energy solutions to deal with climate destabilization, and founder of the highly respected blog, ClimateProgress.org, has performed an admirable public service in his new book, Climate Change: What Everyone Needs to Know. There is no lack of climate information - most of it accessible on the Web, including the massive, multi-volume, several thousand pages of the InterGovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)'s Fifth Assessment Report (which gets read by very few citizens, and nor totally read by nearly all scientists, scholars, officials, advocates, or media reporters). Yet, because of the dis-information campaigns funded by fossil fuel interests, most people hear misinformation being reported by the media, and equally as bad, most media hardly ever cover climate destabilization, and when they do cover, they frequently report incorrectly. Yet, as Joe Romm emphasizes, "Climate change is now an existential issue for humanity. Since everyone’s family will be affected by climate change— indeed, they already are— everyone needs to know the basics about it, regardless of their politics. Many of the major decisions that you, your family, and friends will have to make in the coming years and decades will be affected by human-caused climate change."
Joe wrote this book to help you understand the risks of and resolutions to climate destabilization, while saving you immense time having to track down this knowledge. Within 100 questions Joe covers the gamut. Romm includes both the state of knowledge, which has witnessed rapid insights and new news in just the past 36 months, as well as a new piece of information yet to get proper attention: "Also, this is the first book to examine one of the most important climate questions of all: “Does carbon dioxide at exposure levels expected this century have any direct impacts on human health or cognition?”

The best overview of what climate change is, what harm it causes and will cause, and what must be done to stop it

From following Joe Romm's blog since 2010 I was aware that he is on top of the developing research on climate change and able to explain clearly not only the current scientific understanding of global warming but its implications in terms of our future lives. Since I have been following his blog, along with about fourteen other ones, when I had time, I wasn't sure how much I would get from reading the book. But I am impressed by how much ground he covers, backed by references to current research, and how clearly and methodically he answers the questions he poses.

I found that, although I was familiar with much of the research in a general sense, it was not only helpful to have all of the information in one place, but that some of the specific details he mentions were new to me. Romm doesn't attempt to answer all of the questions about the history of climate change before humans overrode the natural cycle that moved us in and out of ice ages, a disruption reversing the gradual cooling over the last 7000 years until the Industrial Revolution--and particularly the last forty years--when human emissions of greenhouse gasses abruptly sent temperatures upward and presently are taking into global temperatures higher than any during the 11,000 years of remarkably stable temperatures that first permitted the creation of civilizations, industry, and agriculture. That's because his primary concern is to inform readers what is happening now, what will happen going forward, and what we can and should do about it.

I believe this is the most informed book on the subject of climate change that is aimed at a general readership with the intent of presenting an accurate picture of what the scientific community presently knows about global warming and how the climate changes it is bringing about will affect them. Romm's take-home message is that we have a lot of work to do, and if we hope to preserve a world and a way of life that has anything like the stability and security that our present one offers, the time is getting short for us to act effectively and affordably. The good news is that while stopping global warming is a huge task that involves worldwide cooperation, it is very affordable; the bad news is that doing nothing will rapidly transform our world into one with more extreme climates where the dry regions got dryer and the wet ones wetter, all of them warmer, but with less predictable, more violent weather and abrupt shifts of hot and cold temperatures, changes that would increase social unrest and violence, endanger health, cause large extinctions of animal and plant life on land and seas, raise ocean levels that would put many cities at risk, increase crop failures in a world of a rapidly rising population, and on and on. Given the enormity of the changes our world is threatened with, it is essential that everyone becomes well informed of the situation and the choices we are offered.

The book delivers on its title

Thorough, authoritative, and up-to-date: Romm discusses events and studies from 2015. The latest news is quite sobering: the world's in considerably worse shape than I (and, I suspect, most laypeople) had thought. At this point, Romm persuasively argues, we can't fully stop man-made global warming or avoid some of its imminent awful effects, which will likely last for hundreds if not thousands of years, and arrive a lot sooner than climatologists had, until recently, been predicting. The best we can hope for, if we take immediate action, is to stave off utter catastrophe. The "Climate Change and You" section is a real eye-opener; Romm offers advice both both about how you can reduce your carbon footprint and how climate change will affect you. (Are you planning to retire or relocate in the next decade or two? Don't move to the Southwest or a coast.)

Whether she chronicles the obsessions of a broken-hearted, jilted lover trying unsuccessfully not to circle the block of her ex-girlfriend's apartment, or the humiliation of being offered donated, unwashed clothing as part of the alternately boring and anxious "processing" into the U.S. as a political refugee from Castro's Cuba, Obejas' prose moves us. The down-to-earth stories in this debut collection from a Chicago Tribune columnist are pleasing, although they occasionally fail to connect to larger themes. Several of Obejas's narrators are lesbians trying to understand how relationships ought to work. In ``Wrecks'' the narrator explains that she regularly gets into car accidents when romance fades, and since her girlfriend has just left her she is preparing for a crash. The narrator of ``The Cradleland'' confides her fantasy of being ravished in a public bathroom and worries about safe sex even between lesbians since her (male) roommate and best friend is dying of AIDS. In ``Forever'' a lesbian activist trying to sort our her past (she says of her ex-lover, ``We're good lesbians: we've been painfully breaking up for two years'') subjects her current lover to ``the porch test,'' which means trying to imagine the two of them old together, sitting in a rocking chair on a porch. These are very accessible, sweet stories that, while appealing, do not have the lasting effect of the darker work here. The title story, the history of an immigrant Cuban family from the daughter's point of view, is more successful as well as more complex. Fragmented memories contain telling details, such as the summer the narrator's father finally buys a television set after insisting for years that it would be too difficult to transport one back to Cuba, and therefore symbolically accepts that they will remain in the US. ``Above All, a Family Man'' follows a dying man and his married lover as they drive from Chicago to Santa Fe. It both traces their relationship back to its origins and covers the married Rogelio's insistence that he cannot be at risk for AIDS because he is not gay. Great collection for the intermediate pianist

The Kingdom Hearts II Piano Solo Sheet Music is a great collection for musically-inclined fans of Video Game music and the Kingdom Hearts series. It is an easy-to-medium level compilation of some of the best songs from Kingdom Hearts II, arranged with the intermediate pianist in mind.

It is fairly easy to master the songs, especially for those who are already familiar with the game's soundtrack.

I really enjoy to have this book in my hands! X3 The music is like what most reviewers said easy to intermediate and very beautiful to learn the amazing songs Yoko Shimomura composed and appreciate his time and effort he out in the game. Also if you are familiar with the music from Kingdom Hearts, getting the notes should not be too much of a problem but getting the tempo would be easy to get very quick. About the Author

Born in Talisay, Negros Occidental in the Philippines, Alfredo P. Alcala (1925–2000) was a legendary comic book artist. His sword-and-sorcery hero Voltar, created in 1963, gained him international acclaim, particularly in the United States. For Marvel and DC comics, the award winner worked on such popular characters as Conan the Barbarian, Howard the Duck, and Swamp Thing.
Heidi MacDonald is an American comic book writer and editor based in New York City.
Phillip Dana Yeh is an American writer and illustrator of comic books based in California.

for aspiring artists

This is a book for artists. It is straight forward and short. It doesn't get too complicated, but falls more on the lines of "gems of wisdom". The art is inspiring of course, but i think this book isn't just for the comics geek. This is about the life and attitude of being an artist. I'm sure Alfredo Alcala will inspire you. If you spend all your time in front of paper or canvas honing your craft this book is suited towards you and i'm sure you'll like it.

I remember in the 1970's being eager each month for the latest issue of The Savage Sword of Conan to be on bookseller's shelf. The black and white art in this over-sized comic book typically was much more impressive than that in the smaller color comics, and a big part of the reason for that was because of Alfredo Alcala. And so, when I saw this book was available (again), I couldn't resist getting my hands on it.

First...this is not a portfolio. This is not just drawing after drawing to ogle over, though there is plenty of art inside, it's not being reproduced on a frame-able quality.

Second...this book is only eighty pages long and more than a quarter of it is taken up with introductions (by Gil Kane and Roy Thomas, at least).

Third..."Secrets Teachings" is a bit of a misnomer - there really aren't any secrets here, but we do get some insight into Alcala and his technique and his thought process as he develops a comic book. And this is what makes the book worth-while.

Before his work on Conan, Alcala created and illustrated a series called Voltar (a clear predecessor to Conan), and this book selects one issue of Voltar and Alcala walks the reader through the entire issue, explaining his thought process to the layout of the page and for each panel and even why some things are light, some dark, etc. It was really fascinating to read how much thought goes into this from the artist's point of view.

Because, when I think of Alcala's work, I think of his incredibly detailed work, I would have liked to have more insight into his actual process of inking. I did appreciate his mentioning how artists need to be able to draw (not just 'finish'), and how learning about the human body and how it reacts in different poses is important (and he gives an example of when it doesn't work).

Alcala mentions using both pen and brush as tools in his art, and here again I would like to know more. I had always assumed his work (look at the drawing on the cover as pictured above) was purely pen and ink. Where and when would he use a brush?

Though I still have questions about his work, I really enjoyed this book, both for the art and for what I learned. I recommend this book very highly for anyone interested in art, not just comic books.

Looking for a good book? Secret Teachings of a Comic Book Master: The Art of Alfredo Alcala is a wonderful look at the thought process of one of the best artist/inkers in comic book history and should be read, not just by comic book fans but by anyone who appreciates great art.

It offers an interview with a close friend of Alcala's, reviewing the advices he received from him and giving a few insights into his personality; and a small interview with Alcala Apart from diverse small examples from his works mainly before coming to America, it includes around fifteen pages from his masterwork Voltar, with his own explanations about composition. All in black and white.
