But some of those books seemed to ignore the real background of Paleo diets - the non-processed, simple foods available to men during the Paleolithic period.  I'll immediately grant you that the author is a highly trained nutritionist and practitioner of functional medicine. She has much better credentials than any caveman, but she does appreciate the value of the whole, unprocessed foods and the simple ingredients commonly available in that time. She also understands the biological mechanisms that make Paleo foods healthier for us. Furthermore, she has both personally and professionally seen the benefits of eating the way she describes in the book.We have advantages that cavemen didn't. A caveman just ate whatever he had. No Snickers bars! No refined sugars or flour for that matter. The meat he ate was not grain fed; it came from what we call free range animals. We have broader and more consistently available supplies of food, but not all suited to the health and energy needs of our bodies. As a result, many of the calories we consume are stored as fat.
The book is well-structured and well-written. I didn't notice any formatting, spelling, or grammatical errors. The introductory material was very informative about the genetic and dietary basis for weight loss.
This author explains the foundations of her diet plan before launching into a substantial list of recipes - 365!  No single caveman would have had this luxury, but these foods would have been available somewhere in the world in that time. They would have loved to eat these meals! You will too!

Time to Eat Paleo Style!

I have read so many Paleo books my brain is going to explode! What's great about this guide is you get the personal. The author uses this successful eating strategy to lose weight and tasty recipes to help motivate you to reach your weight loss goals.

This book is sensible and not written with an iron fist! It's all about understanding healthy eating and making better food choices for you!

Grab it. Read it. And let the author know what you loved!

A great guide to Paleo diet!

This book has changed my perception of food in general. I've read other ebooks on Paleo diet before, but Beran Parry was able to explain the benefits of this diet in a very simple way, and show how vital the Paleo diet is for our bodies. We all have too much of environmental exposure that we have no control of, and controlling the quality of food is something that is in our hands. For me getting skinnier is just a nice benefit of this diet, but I think a health benefit of Paleo diet is of a greater importance. I love the extensive list of Paleo recipes in this book and an easy to use 12 weeks meal plan provided. With a guidance of this book making healthy food choices in life has just got much easier!

A little too sweet in my opinion

Like the author, I am a trained holistic nutritionist. I received my certificate in 2010. I am a Master Herbalist since 2008. I also follow the Paleolithic lifestyle to maintain my health (weight is not my issue). When I saw this book in a recommendation from Amazon in my Kindle, I read the description and thought it might be helpful for the many people who come to me for help. One I could recommend to them.

There is not enough explanation of epigenetics although references are provided. So the main focus is on the recipes of which there are many given. And the 12 week menu plan is an excellent idea.

Where I have a problem with the recipes and especially the menu plan is the preponderance of sweetness, especially the use of liquid stevia. Perhaps an occasional sweet dish using whole foods is appropriate, but for every meal? Sweetening dishes with honey or maple syrup makes more sense than liquid stevia which is processed. Berries or coconut or apples or cinnamon (true cinnamon is sweet) or a combination of these would be even better. But not at every meal.

If I recommended this book, I would have to explain how to modify the recipes and menu plan. But the concept of the book is good.

too many cooks?

It's funny that the time has an exclamation point in it. Unlike the double meaning of Cornel West's title "Race Matters," there is nothing inventive in this. I'm surprised that academics would want to scream anything for a book like this.
The contributors mention that the idea of "women in development" (or WID) has changed to "gender and development" (or GAD), yet has not looked specifically at how masculinity issues affect men in developing countries. Further, it is honorably noted how women's issues won't be advanced without male participation. If men don't agree to use condoms, AIDS will still spread in southern Africa. If men don't learn to respect children, they will sire boys that will commit the same injustices they have, etc. This book definitely had impressive goals.
The book's contributors are equally male and female; also, it seems ethnically diverse. While the book has chapters involving Asia and Latin America, half the book focuses on sub-Saharan Africa. This is left unexamined. Is that where most development scholars work? Is that where funds tend to be directed? Is that where masculinity issues are the most glaring? It's surprising that the cover of the book shows a Latin American male worker and his sons when the majority of the subjects in the book are African males.
This book must be applauded for two reasons. First, I appreciated its mention of boys and the violence that grown men perpetrate against them. One chapter mentions that development agencies must do more to re-program child soldiers who have been abused by rebels and goverments in power. International child advocates may want to read this book for that reason.
Second, along with the aforementioned example of how dominant men do not just oppress women, but also other males, this book highlights the diversity of males in developing countries. Examples include older men vs. younger men in South Africa, classic bugarrones vs. modern pingueros in Cuba, or tribal differences in Namibia. Obviously, the scholars here borrow from feminists of color that say women are not a monolithic category and that race and class must be taken into account. These authors apply that claim to men. This book was gay-inclusive or at least tried not to be rigidly heterocentric.
Still, the chapters wondered on and on, with very little structure. The points that authors want to make to other development scholars usually had nothing to do with the actual groups or phenomena they later described. This book was totally disorganized and not much fun to read.
I applaud the contributors for trying to bring men's studies and development studies together. Still, this was quite a flawed production.

About the Author
Geoff Johns is an award-winning writer and one of the most popular contemporary comic book writers today. Johns is the author of The New York Times bestselling graphic novels Aquaman: The Trench, Blackest Night, Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps War, Justice League: Origin, Superman: Brainiac and Batman: Earth One which hit #1 on the bestseller list. He is also known for transforming Green Lantern into one of the most critically and commercially successful franchises in comics. Johns was born in Detroit and studied media arts, screenwriting, and film at Michigan State University. After moving to Los Angeles, he became an assistant to Richard Donner, director of Superman: The Movie. He and his mentor Donner later co-wrote Superman: Last Son featuring the return of General Zod. Johns has written for various other media, including episodes of Smallville, Arrow and Adult Swim's Robot Chicken, for which he was nominated along with his co-writers for an Emmy. Great Story with Great Art

This hardcover trade collects issues 32-39 of Superman, written by Geoff John's, and drawn by John Romita Jr.The story is great and takes some turns that were unexpected. The new character introduced in this story, Ulysses, is well developed and interesting. Ulysses is a mirror of superman , in a way that as the character of Ulysses gets developed it also reflects on Superman/Kent and develops his character too. Although, Ulysses is not just a clone of superman, he has his own distinct views and character.Ulysses was a child born to two scientists who were working on ways to travel between dimensions, when something escapes to earth's dimension with the potential to destroy the earth. Believing all hope is lost, Ulysses parents send him through a portal to another dimension, to a world that appears too have intelligent and sentient life, but no war or violence. When Ulysses is sent through the portal he is given superman like abilities. The story gets much more interesting from there, and my attention was held the entire way through the book.

The way Geoff Johns writes Superman you can tell he understands Kent's character very well. This is the artist, John Romita Jr.'s first time drawing any DC book, but he has previous works drawing marvel books, most notably, Spiderman. His art can be very hit or miss for people, but personally I love his art, and I'm glad hes finally drawing DC books.

The binding for this book is not great. It is definitely solid and durable, but You get a lot of gutter loss between pages, which can take you out of the book and be very distracting. This was the only issue I had with the book, and its why i can't give it 5 stars.

In Summary: this was a great book with a great story, and at the very least interesting art. The binding and construction of the book is solid and durable, but causes a lot of distracting gutter loss. I would strongly recommend this book for any superman fan. You don't need prior knowledge or to read any other superman trades, just order it and read! :)

"You think I only step in front of guns because I'm bulletproof?"

Superman is easily my favorite superhero of all time, and obviously my favorite DC character bar none. That being said, the character has never had consistent quality across the board and most of his books range from mediocre to just good or pretty good. Great Superman stories are few and far between. The New 52 did the character no favors as he seemed to be changed to appeal to people who clearly had no regard for the character before and at the expense of the old fandom. That being said, in the 4 years since the New 52 began, only Grant Morrison's Action Comics run and this book are worthy of absolute praise, in my opinion. Grant Morrison and Geoff Johns are authors who simply know how the Man of Steel works, both as a character and as an ideal. Never have I been disappointed with their takes and this latest book by Geoff Johns is easily added to my own personal canon of great Superman stories.

Geoff Johns had previously written the character before in the Action Comics monthly in the mid 00s, and his return to the character was only made more exceptional due to the addition of John Romita Jr. (JRJR) on art duties. I'll be entirely honest, JRJR's work in this book is not his best. Having previously read Wolverine: Enemy of the State and Daredevil: The Man Without Fear, quality works the both of them, his work in this book comes off occasionally as rushed. It's my only real nitpick with this book because when JRJR shines, he definitely creates a very kinetic and cinematic experience but is able to handle the quiet character moments with equal quality. That's pretty much the only negative thing I have to say about the book. The quality of the writing simply amazed me to no end.

Geoff Johns handles his work with aplomb and this book is no exception. I don't want to give away too much about the story for the interested parties but suffice to say, Johns creates a story where Superman is confronted by a veritable Man of Tomorrow who seems every bit the strange visitor from another planet but with a twist so simple and obvious, one would think someone had already thought of it before. Johns proves to be an idea factory and gives Superman both a kindred spirit and a rival who demonstrates what makes Superman so special in a world full of compromising vigilantes. This type of story is nothing new but in this instance, it's Johns' writing that imbues what could be a tired story with a big heart that it could've easily passed for a Superman movie. The last chapter alone has one of my absolute favorite Superman moments in the history of the character and with only a rhetorical question, shows just how heroic and good Superman is.

I felt the need to post this review since Superman Unchained by Scott Snyder and Jim Lee has many reviews and in some ways, both books tell the same story. Having read both, I felt this one needed more exposure. Which isn't to say that Snyder and Lee's work was bad, far from it, but it also feels more gratuitous in art and story and forces Superman into a morally questionable area with an equally dubious moral outcome that frankly I tire of seeing Superman forced into. He's a good guy who does the right thing. It really is that simple. This book highlights this trait completely. Most people could care less about characters like that but it's the entire reason Superman stands out. Other heroes might stray or doubt and that certainly makes for compelling storytelling, but Superman is supposed to be a paragon. The character can and will make the hardest decision at complete personal cost because that's what Superman does.

Thank you, Geoff Johns. For reminding me why I loved this character to begin with.

One of my favorite Superman stories that I've ever read!

Collects Superman (2011) issues #32-39

This large collection features the DC Comics debut of legendary comics artist, John Romita Jr. He teams up with one of my favorite writers, Geoff Johns, to put together one of my favorite Superman stories that I've ever read. Well-known inker, Klaus Janson is also a part of this awesome creative team.

In this story, a new character with an origin very similar to Superman's shows up in Metropolis. Good news...it doesn't seem like he has arrived to do evil. He might just be an awesome new partner for Superman in fighting the world's evils.

Also in this volume, Superman manifests a brand new power (to go along with his already large list of powers).

Plus, a long-time "Superman" cast member finds out about Superman's secret identity.

This is the first volume of "Superman" that I've read since the start of The New 52, and even though it was Volume 6, it was easy for me to feel all caught up on the story. This seems to be a great jumping on point.

Geoff Johns writing "Superman" (while teaming with John Romita Jr.) was the main reason I wanted to pick up this book, and I actually purchased some of the individual issues that make up this collection.

HERE ARE MY SPOILER-FILLED REVIEWS OF SOME OF THE ISSUES IN THIS VOLUME:

Issue #32: I bought this issue because DC put together a creative dream team of Geoff Johns and John Romita Jr. to oversee Superman. The issue opens 25 years ago, with a couple at a research facility being trapped. The strange matter they were working with has accidentally been released, and their lab is on lockdown. The self-destruct sequence has started, so they need to send their infant son to a different dimension to save him. There is only enough room in the probe for him, so while a young, baby Neil is sent away to Dimension Four (a dimension that has been observed as being very much like his home dimension), his parents perish. Before dying, his parents mentioned that the air there is saturated with undefinable energies that could potentially empower human physiology. This origin story obviously sounds very similar to Superman’s origin, and I’m guessing that “Dimension Four” will end up being DC’s Prime Earth. A few pages later, that theory is proven wrong. The baby, all grown up and known as Ulysses helps Superman during a battle with a powerful being. Ulysses claims that he thought he was the last son of Earth, and that it had been destroyed. He is shocked to learn that it still exists. He seems to be super-powered, much like Superman, even though he is back on his home planet. (4.5 stars)

Issue #33: Another good issue. Superman and Ulysses are becoming friends, and in his investigation Clark finds out that Neil’s parents never died. The family is reunited. A different reunion happened at the Daily Planet, and I enjoyed seeing Clark and Perry White working so well together. There is a ton of potential for the character Ulysses. I can’t wait to see what DC does with him. (4 stars)

Issue #34: A new villain debuts for Superman, and I have high hopes for The Machinist. Ulysses continues to be a cool character, and I love this new team-up of him and Superman. This Superman feels more like the pre-Crisis Superman instead of the New 52 Superman, but that is a good thing. Ulysses and his parents spent a lot of time together in this issue, and we learned more about his powers. His powers affect Clark’s powers in a negative way, so that’s interesting. (3.5 stars)

Issue #35: I guess it was only a matter of time before Superman and Ulysses were at odds. I thought this might happen, but I hoped that it wouldn’t. Ulysses doesn’t like what has become of Earth. Too many weapons. So he makes an international broadcast, inviting whoever wants to join him (up to 6 million people maximum) to board his ship and go to the Fourth Dimension, a lovely place of peace where he grew up. The Machinist was a mysterious and cool villain. He may have died, but probably not. There is another mysterious villain monitoring Superman, calling him Clark, and I wonder if this is the “Mr. Oz” that The Machinist referenced. (3.5 stars)

Issue #36: Oh, crap! Ulysses is actually a bad guy. That sucks because I liked him and Superman as a team. I kind of suspected he might end up not being good, but I bought the story that he was just disappointed in how Earth turned out. I don’t know his true agenda, but it seems to be bad. I expect more of Superman fighting Ulysses in the next issue. This issue featured an abbreviated, but good battle between them. Also, The Machinist didn’t appear in here, and I like him. (4 stars)

Issue #37: This is the issue where we officially get the beginning of Superman vs. Ulysses. First they team up to stop Klerik and the other bad guys from using humans as living battery power. Then, Ulysses adopted world is accidentally destroyed. Ulysses blames Clark, and a fight ensues. (4 stars)

Focus on self defense and basics

This book covers jiu jitsu fundamentals and self defense as good as any. For what it aims to do - preserve the simplicity of Helio's high leverage innovations - it is a fanstastic, if slightly pricey, book. There's answers to many questions that don't appear in daily jiu jitsu training. ("How do I use what I know to defend a knife attack?") It's also great for reminders - "What's the perfect posture to avoid a triangle?" - Helio demonstrates the correct way.

All this said, do buy the book for what it is, not what it isn't. It isn't a manual on modern innovations - there are better places to learn the X-guard, the De La Riva Guard, the Rubber Guard, and other no Gi techniques. The focus is on gi jiu jitsu fundamentals and self defense. For that, it succeeds greatly.

Amazing

This book contains the complete foundation of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. The theory, principles, and technique are invaluable; and come directly from the source. Grandmaster Helio Gracie is no longer with us, but anyone new to the practice of GJJ can use this to learn his amazing self-defense/fighting art. I am a GJJ Brown Belt with over 9 years of experience and still constantly reference this book. In addition, there are historic photographs and stories that any student will enjoy.

Adorable and fun

This book is exactly what is it supposed to be - a fluff story with adorable stickers for the kids. Another review said it wasn't a great story, which is correct. But it was really fun for my daughter to add stickers/pictures to the book. So even though it's not the best story, it's cool for her to see her "work". Would buy more of these for sure! We are HUGE Maisy fans!!!

About the Author
Sam Hill is professor emeritus of Spanish and Portuguese and has taught all levels of both languages at California State University, Sacramento over a 35 year career. His is the primary author of the first two editions of this text. He continues to travel and on occasion is called back to teaching.

María Mayberry is associate professor of Spanish at California State University, Sacramento and author of several scholarly articles in Hispania. She has a continuing research interest in language acquisition. She teaches graduate seminars in comparative grammars and applied linguistics.

Edward Baranowski, is professor of Spanish at California State University, Sacramento, and teaches all levels of Spanish. He has translated several texts written by early Spanish explorers in California. He teaches graduate seminars in dialectology and history of the language.

A must-have for students and teachers

What a thrill to learn of the third edition of Dr. Hill’s text! He was my professor at CSU, Sacramento in the mid-70’s, and we used his handouts preparatory to the first two published editions of the text. The books have been of invaluable help to me as a high school and community college instructor of both Spanish and ESL over a thirty-five year career, and it is my pleasure to review the co-authored third edition. It is, in a word, splendid!

As was the case with the previous editions, the updated and expanded third edition is an inventory of the major morphological and syntactical contrasts between Spanish and English. The morphological segments deal with the grammatical forms (verbal, adjectival, etc.) of both languages, and the syntactical presentations present the basic word-order and structural elements of the two. Some helpful phonetic information appears, such as the three pronunciations for final “-s” in regular English plurals (cat>cats, dog>dogs, class>classes) and third person, singular present tense English verbs (sit>sits, drag>drags, touch>touches). Also treated are the three possible renditions of “-ed,” for the English regular past tense. Similarly, the authors present the phonetics of the Spanish consonant/vowel combinations as these apply across the language, especially its verbal system.

The third edition like the previous two was written for students essentially fluent in both languages and with considerable academic training in each. Potential teachers and/or translators of Spanish and English would find the book especially useful. For example, of particular interest to the English speaker are such entries as Chapter 6 (A Question of Aspect: The Spanish Imperfect-Preterite Contrast), Chapter 7 (The Spanish Indicative and Subjunctive Moods) or perhaps Chapter 10 (English To Be vs. Spanish Ser, Estar and Haber). Likewise, the authors direct such Chapters as these specifically to the Spanish native: Chapter 8 (English Modal Auxiliaries and Their Spanish Equivalents) and Chapter 9 (English Phrasal Verbs). But most of the 27 chapters deal with inter-lingual contrasts essential to both kinds of language learners as the titles indicate in Chapter 5 (The Comparative Syntax of Statements and Questions), Chapter 11 (English and Spanish Personal Pronouns) and Chapter 17 (Conditional Sentences and Unreal Comparison). Four carefully elaborated appendices follow the chapters: I. English Irregular Verbs, II. Spanish Irregular Verbs, III. Verb Tense Terminology and IV. Verbal Types and Usages. The index was carefully worked-out, and I usually found everything I looked for at a quick glance. New to the third edition is a meticulously prepared Glossary of Grammatical Terms, cross-referenced (as are numerous items in the text itself), presenting short, to-the-point definitions with examples of entries as basic as “noun” and “adjective” through all the tenses of both languages, to rather complicated concepts like “clause,” “complex sentence,” “sequence of tenses,” and “counter-factual conditional sentences.”
The glossary, I feel, is an especially valuable addition to this edition, for as teachers can attest, modern-day students lack solid preparation in grammatical terminology.

The exercises remain a fundamental feature of the new edition. All employ standard, everyday spoken English and Spanish usages. My opinion is that some of the more elevated levels of language might well have been included, like those found in newspapers and editorials. Unfortunately, the exercise key attendant to the second edition was omitted from the third.The authors’ justification for not including a key was to me unconvincing. I would urge them to consider preparing a key as an ancillary to the text, the publisher willing.

Interspersed throughout the chapters you find notes as mere additions or clarifications to the text at hand, comments on colloquial usages and regional variation, language history and current research on various topics. I found the over-all formatting of the text very appealing to the eye, consistent, and rather artistically thought out. It alone contributes greatly to the text’s attractiveness.

I was particularly impressed with how well some of the most important topics of the previous editions were updated and expanded. The old preterite/imperfect contrast of Spanish was thoroughly re-worked with the addition of a whole new component, that of lexical aspect. The English equivalencies of these problematic Spanish oppositions was also put in clearer focus. The Spanish subjunctive/indicative, always a real burden for the English speaker, was greatly improved with special attention given to the often very slight differences of meaning or speaker intention when one or the other mood is used. This is especially true for noun clauses following main verbs of opinion or reaction (“No me parece justo que le das/des tanta ayuda”). The authors came up with a novel approach to verbs traditionally called “reflexive,” and made the difficult and multi-faceted meanings and usages of English modal auxiliaries (“can, could, will, would, may, might, should, must, be supposed to, had better, have to”, etc.) more complete and clear, not only to Spanish speakers, but to English natives as well. The topic of Spanish noun gender received an entirely new and expanded treatment in light of new linguistic scholarship. Clearly the assistance of the two co-authors resulted in such improvements in the text.

A reviewer of the second edition noted that that text seemed more geared toward the English speaker learning Spanish than the reverse. I find that still to be the case, at least to some degree, in the third. Any future edition could use an considerably expanded English component, explaining in particular such issues in partitive usage (Chapter 19) as, “Do you need some help? > No, I don’t need any help” and the syntax of English adverbs of time, place, frequency, etc., always difficult for Spanish speakers, for example, “We often see people fail...” converting to adverbs “of negative bias” with two possibilities, “We rarely see people fail.../Rarely do we see people fail...”

This book is a “must” for students of Spanish or English, for teachers of either or both languages and for translators. The authors wrote it especially to meet your practical needs. Pretty much everything you want to find out about how both languages actually work is there, complete with an inventory of where the two are the most similar and where the most divergent. The various editions of the “Bilingual Grammar” gave me a solid and useable control over the essentials of the two grammatical systems, and these understandings have helped me in my personal language development and more importantly, in the teaching of both. Those texts were always within easy reach. You really owe it to yourself and your students to check out this third edition. I predict that you and it will become very close indeed.

An indispensable book for Spanish teachers and others.

Anyone who wants a thorough understanding of English and Spanish grammar, as well as the relationship between the two languages, should have this book. The audience is three-fold: 1. advanced students of Spanish, 2. anyone who is teaching or may teach Spanish as a foreign language, and 3. anyone involved in translating to or from Spanish. This is not a book for beginning or intermediate students. This third revision of a very successful and widely used textbook adds several features and in general is superior to the previous versions. The authors have divided their presentation into 27 chapters covering all the major difficulties which a native speaker or English or Spanish might have when learning the other language. The chapters include all the usual problem areas for English native speakers: to be vs. ser and estar, the Spanish preterite—imperfect contrast, and pronoun usage. But they have also described the problems that native Spanish speakers may have when learning English: phrasal verbs (e. g. eat up, burn down, pass out), the somewhat similar verb plus preposition constructions (e. g. ask for, listen to), and the imperative systems.

Each chapter includes a comprehensive list of examples which illustrate the point under discussion. For example, chapter 10 treats a commonly studied crux, the uses of ser and estar, as well as the contrast between Spanish verb haber and the English “there is.” The authors' discussion goes far beyond what is typical in beginning and intermediate texts: they list 8 exclusive uses of ser and 5 of estar, with several examples under each; they describe the use of the two verbs with predicate adjectives (e.g the difference between es bueno and está bueno), with a two-page long list—with examples—of adjectives which may be encountered after either verb; and they even describe the difference between the ser-passive and the estar-passive, a relatively rare contrast. The chapter continues with a thorough description of the differences between hay, as in “hay un castillo,” and “there is/are,” and concludes with a translation practice exercise of 26 sentences, half English and half Spanish. The previous edition contained at the end a key to the exercises; this third edition contains no key. The authors believe that this book should be used, not for self-study, but with an instructor or other colleagues. The authors may be mistaken in this belief, since an individual enthusiast might in fact go through this book for its intrinsic interest or use it as a reference manual. A key could perhaps be issued as a separate volume.

The book deals almost entirely with grammar, specifically syntax. It does not address pronunciation except in isolated cases, for example the fact that the plural -s in English is really pronounced -z (e.g. beads, heads), a fact which can present difficulties for a native Spanish speaker. Of the 27 chapters the majority deal with verb syntax, the source of most problems, but there are chapters on noun gender, adjective comparison, and the many pronouns in the two languages. The authors include several valuable appendices: the principal irregular English verbs, the principal irregular Spanish verbs with all the irregular forms listed, a list of Spanish verbal types (a catch-all title which includes lists of the reflexive verbs, transitive and intransitive verbs of motion, verbs which always take a preposition, and so on). The book concludes with a valuable 21-page glossary of the grammatical terms which are used throughout the book and a complete index.

The authors have remodeled and recast the previous editions of this text, taking into account the wide classroom experience which each of the present (and past) authors have had. The resulting improvements have made this an indispensable book for anyone who does serious work in English and Spanish.
