Review
“At two in the morning of April 15, 1977, twenty armed men in civilian clothes arrested Jacobo Timerman, editor and publisher of a leading Buenos Aires newspaper. Thus began thirty months of imprisonment, torture, and anti-Semitic abuse. . . . Unlike 15,000 other Argentines, ‘the disappeared,’ Timerman was eventually released into exile. His testimony [is] gripping in its human stories, not only of brutality but of courage and love; important because it reminds us how, in our world, the most terrible fantasies may become fact.”—New York Times, Books of the Century

“It ranks with Hannah Arendt’s Eichmann in Jerusalem in its examination of the totalitarian mind, the role of anti-Semitism, the silence.”—Eliot Fremont-Smith, Village Voice

“It is impossible to read this proud and piercing account of [Timerman’s] suffering and his battles without wanting to be counted as one of Timerman’s friends.”—Michael Walzer, New York Review of Books

“Timerman was a living reminder that real prophets are irritants and not messengers of reassurance. He told it like it is, whether in Argentina, Israel, Europe, or the United States.”—Arthur Miller

Excellent
By A Customer
Excellent analysis of the methodology behind totalitarian regimes, with emphasis on the persecution of Jews. Personally the most redeeming part I found in this book was Timerman's personal methods to cope with the traumatic torture, and, most applicable to myself, an existence without tenderness and love. His words ring loud and true, his advice is sound, sound, sound.

Siempre la misma pregunta
By Amazon Customer
I won't give a synopsis of the book b/c everyone else has already done that for you. What I can say about this book is that it is an impetus. After you read it, you'll most likely be hungry for more information about this brutal time in a seemingly well-developed country. Questions to consider: Why the silence of the press, with the exception of Timerman's newspaper 'La Opinion' and the 'B.A. Herald?' How could someone treated so horribly come out of it okay? Why did this happen after Pinochet's regime and the Nazi regime? This is post WWII, so why? Where was the rest of the world? The book is splendid, the first chapter gut-wrenching and beautiful. You will love it as much as Elie Wiesel's 'Night.'

Excellent analysis of the totalitarian mindset
By A Customer
Jacobo Timerman has written a gripping and terrifying account of his experiences at the mercy of Argentina's Peronist regime of the late 70's. A well respected, professional journalist in Buenos Aires, he was editor of the major newspaper La Opinión until he was kidnapped by the military for publishing articles critical of their terrorist tactics. He details how as a political prisoner, and more signifigantly as a Jew, he was held and tortured by a military carried away by their own delusions and rationalizations of violence - and by their virulent anti-semitism. Timerman displays a penetrating insight into the mindset of his captors and of a society that tried to ignore what was happening. A must read.

The fastest trail to the camp is over the White Mountain, where there are treacherous glaciers, steep climbs, and mountain spirits. With the rest of their family depending on them, Maroo and Otak set out alone. But when Otak goes missing, Maroo is forced to make the most difficult of all decisions: to stay and search for her brother or to continue on to the camp in order to save the rest of her family. This modern classic offers readers a gripping tale of survival as well as a vivid portrait of prehistoric people.

and my aide were anxious to hear what came next and disappointed if we were too busy to read
By Terri Clay
I bought this as a read-aloud for a middle school special education class studying the Stone Age. There was enough content about migrating with the seasons, tools and fire, the introduction of the dog, hunting and gathering, belief in spirits, and how the family unit worked together that it ended up being a major jumping off place for many topics. The story was compelling and generally fast-paced. All the students, even my "cool" 8th grade boys, and my aide were anxious to hear what came next and disappointed if we were too busy to read. A definite hit!

Interesting read
By Donna L. Scofield
Very well-researched and realistic picture of life in the Ice Age. Written for young adult, but interesting enough to be enjoyed by adults. Our teacher daughter recommended it to me because of my interest in pre-history, and I'm glad she did. It was written quite a few years ago, but seems as relevant as if written yesterday.

Gr 8 Up—Hazel and Augustus need to move over because Batman and Robyn are about to take their place in the annals of YA literary romantic couples. The two teens meet in a group setting for those afflicted by obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Adam Ross, aka Batman, has severe OCD that is debilitating at times. He is intimidated when he joins a weekly group because most of the members are a bit older than him; there is also a girl who he finds irresistible. Each group member takes on a superhero persona for sessions at the urging of their psychologist. Adam chooses Batman, and is floored when his crush Robyn chooses Robin in order to be his sidekick. Adam has a knack for helping others who struggle with their own issues, including his half-brother, Sweetie, who has regular meltdowns; his mother, who is a hoarder; and his best friend, Ben, who has a weight problem. Unfortunately, he is so consumed with his own counting, tapping, and difficulties entering thresholds that he does not realize his gifts. Through Adam, Toten examines the trials and tribulations of OCD head on, but Adam also deals with the usual teenage problems of love, friendships, school, and divorced parents. Readers will relate to Adam's anxieties and root for him as his relationship with Robyn develops. VERDICT This is a definite next-read for teens who loved John Green's The Fault in Our Stars (Dutton, 2012) and Cammie McGovern's Say What You Will (HarperCollins, 2014).—Elizabeth Kahn, Patrick F. A book that succeeds on numerous levels
By John Rogers ClarkIV
Navigating the teen years is challenging even when everything in your life is good, but when endless things jump out to bite you, it becomes a scary minefield. This is what life is like for Adam Ross who has obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) so severe that it has built a giant all between him and everyone except his mom and step brother Sweetie. That's because they have their own demons. Mom is a hoarder and barely hanging on to the facade that she's a successful nurse at a local hospital. Sweetie loves Adam, or Batman, his super hero persona adopted in his OCD outpatient group. Adam is the only person who can calm Sweetie when he starts to escalate due to his own mental illness.
When Robyn Plummer joins the group after being discharged from a residential treatment program, Adam falls for her very fast and very hard. She makes him begin to think about the possibility of something better than letting his mental and physical rituals rule every moment of his life. He starts by finally involving himself in group, getting everyone to adopt a super hero alter identity and then encouraging everyone to walk down the stairs instead of taking the elevator. He even gets everyone to accompany him on a field trip after group to the Catholic church where he was an altar boy before his illness grew so strong he stopped going.
Everything Adam does to break out of his own head, he does for Robyn and it not only helps her get a lot better, it has positive effects on other members of the group. Unfortunately, no matter how much his efforts help everyone else, Adam can't stop his own rituals from escalating, so much so that he fears he might even be detrimental to Robyn's emotional health.
How they navigate the doubly tricky seas of illness and teen romance, how he deals with his mom's increasingly bizarre behavior and what happens when he finds himself facing a giant crisis that's beyond his ability to hide, make for a sometimes painful, but always gripping read.
This book succeeds on a number of levels. It's a great offbeat teen romance, it makes each member of the OCD group seem very real and human, it makes the agony of severe OCD rituals understandable for anyone unfamiliar with the illness and it does a great job of portraying the unique stresses of blended families when there are huge secrets that everyone tiptoes around.
I liked the ending and strongly suggest anyone reading the book read the interview with the author at the end because it really helps to understand how and why she wrote this story. This is an excellent addition for school and public libraries.

A refreshingly honest and good coming-of-age story
By Little Willow
When Robyn Plummer walks into Room 13B, Adam falls in love at first sight. That may sound like a typical boy-meets-girl story, but, thankfully, this book is anything but cliché. The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B by Teresa Toten is refreshingly honest, anchored by a memorable main character.

Adam, age 15, is vulnerable, loyal, and sometimes confused by his feelings and by the actions of those around him. He is quieter than some, a little more in his thoughts, which are expressed in limited third-person narrative. His parents are divorced, and he lives with his mom most of the time. She pretends everything is okay while enduring her own private struggle, something Adam tries to both respect and understand. Meanwhile, his father has remarried, and while Adam gets along all right with his dad and his stepmom, the member of that household that undoubtedly enjoys his visits the most is his little brother, Sweetie, who is full of life and full of love. (Kudos to Toten for creating a young, vibrant character that sounds and acts his age. Absolutely spot-on depiction of a preschooler.) It is interesting to note what (and who) each member of Adam's family clings to, and what they're willing to fight for when the going gets tough.

When Adam isn't in one of his two homes, he is usually in Room 13B. Room 13B isn't a classroom; it's a meeting place for a young adult OCD support group. This book gave me what I wanted but didn't get from the TV show Red Band Society: a realistic look at a diverse group of kids who meet due to a medical diagnosis but are not defined by their condition; people who are not the "worst" examples of their condition nor the "best"; characters who are relatable but not cookie-cutter. Each teen has a distinct personality, appearance, and medical history. Their bonding sessions both inside and outside of Room 13B are wonderful. They honestly try to help one another rather than sabotage or one-up each other. When Chuck, the friendly, caring doctor who oversees the group, asks the kids to adopt nom de guerres, almost all of them select superhero names. Robyn picks Robin, prompting Adam to immediately declare himself Batman.

Adam is determined to win Robyn's heart. He has never been in love before, never had a girlfriend, but he falls head over heels for Robyn. He is not simply on a quest for love, but actually fascinated by this specific girl. As the story continues, their friendship develops and deepens. Adam's unconscious need to protect others extends easily to Robyn as he learns more about her, and he tries to be a better person (and taller) so he can be worthy of her. His OCD rituals are both aided and exacerbated by his new goals and his growing awareness that things aren't entirely right at either of his homes.

This book is good. It's solid and it's interesting and it's realistic and it's good. It sheds light on a condition that many people suffer from in silence and shame, and instead of reducing OCD to a punchline or over-dramatizing it, Toten offers believable characters with various rituals and paths to healing. The story moves at an easygoing pace with decent plotting. And most of all, it has a realistic protagonist who is a truly good egg. Adam is dealing with that wonderful, frustrating time when you don't want to be treated like a child but you sometimes wish you were still a carefree little kid, when you want to be independent but you can't drive yet, when you realize your parents are people with their own histories and bad habits and secrets. Just as the author does with his little brother, Toten is also able to capture the appropriate tone for Adam's age and situation. Adam sits at neither hero-with-a-burden character extreme, not wallowing in unbearable darkness and cursing the weight of the world that sits upon his shoulders, nor grinning from ear to ear and boasting that everything's going to be fine. He's simply trying to live his life. As his heart gets broken and mended, so will the hearts of readers.

The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B by Teresa Toten is a beautifully simple, steady coming-of-age story that I highly recommend, especially to fans of Jordan Sonnenblick and David Levithan.

A Lovable Hero with OCD
By Kathryn
This is a very well-written book that was surprisingly fun, sweet and deep. The story centers around Adam, a fifteen-year-old kid with OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder). At the start of the story he's joined a support group for fellow OCD sufferers and immediately falls in love with one of the other teenagers, Robyn. The following love story between the two of them is sweet and I enjoyed watching Robyn and Adam help each other with their own OCD problems.

Adam is a great main character. He's sweet but constantly unsure of himself, full of anxiety and dealing with multiple problems at home (mostly surrounding his mother, who is dealing with her own compulsive hoarding and depression). Adam's OCD escalates as the book goes on, and he is constantly trying to manage it and hide it. I thought the author did a great job describing just how much OCD can affect a person's life and just how time-consuming it can be (describing, for example, how it would often take Adam fifteen minutes just to walk through his front door at home).

I especially loved Adam's support group, which was filled with quirky characters who all form an unlikely friendship. At the beginning of the book each of the members takes on a superhero name, and so we hardly hear their real names. Instead we deal with the likes of people such as Wonder Woman, Thor, Wolverine and Batman. The antics of the OCD support group were always amusing and at the same time provided insight into the different aspects that OCD can have.

This was, overall, a very sweet coming-of-age story for Adam with a nice touch of romance and some great side characters. I really have no complaints about it, and it's a great story for anyone interested in learning about OCD.

Lost Heartbeats (Alexander & Maya Book 2), by Ella Maise

*This book is the second and last part of the duet. The first book, Lost Prelude is already published.

My name is Alexander, and I'm no fucking hero.
Not when I couldn't even save the little heartbeats I was supposed to protect with my life.

When a fist closes around my heart after a death brings me to my knees, I finally go after the woman I'd been craving for months. Not just because her beautiful face is the only thing that slips through the pain when I close my eyes, but because she has secretly carved a place for herself in my heart - leaving me with no choice.

But if I do this, if I make myself believe that I deserve her, will the choices I make ruin everything between us? Will she accept the fact that she doesn't get to leave me twice?

An Epic Love Story that has it all. Simply Outstanding.
By Mia's Point Of View
What a beautiful and emotional story this is.

I loved Lost Prelude, the first book in the series, and I couldn’t wait for the author to write the next one.

And Ella Maise does not disappoint.

Lost Heartbeats is not an intensified version of Lost Prelude. That would be me undermining the first book. They are both emotional, intense, and. . .

This series is simply one of my favorites and one of the best I’ve read.

Alexander and Maya’s story is a truly beautiful one and one exceptionally written.

Ella Maise has delivered a magnificent love-story that goes beyond romance. It speaks of an epic love that goes beyond borders, beyond grief, and beyond everything, even themselves.

As an avid reader, both you and I know there are thousands of other books, especially romance and even erotica. BUT THIS STORY is worth-reading. THIS STORY must be read.

Alexander and Maya’s relationship survives one storm after the other. Both of them are struggling with grief, which does a comeback and almost brings them to their knees.

One of the many things I loved about this book is that both of them hold on to each other. They fight for each other. And they empower each other. When Alexander is down, Maya brings light back to his heart. When Maya is in the dark, Alexander does not give up. He stays and fights. He doesn’t let go.

They have this magnetizing bond that is indescribable. It has a life of its own that leaves the pages and become something more.

The author’s writing is beautiful, with quality, and the books reflect that. Each book is remarkable and gives you that extra-something that makes you connect with the characters. That makes you care.

This isn’t a simple story with steamy scenes. This is an epic love-story that has it all. Love. Laughter. Tears. Drama. Grief. Hope.

If you haven’t read this series yet, I strongly recommend it from the bottom of my heart.

It’s an outstanding series, and it’s only the beginning for the author.

Congratulations to the author for this one! It couldn’t be better! And I couldn’t love it any more than I do.

LOST HEARTBEATS receives 5 AMAZING STARS, because it just is exceptional.

Completely gutted me!
By Jasmine Kok
Ever come across a book that you know you just had to pick up after seeing a gorgeous cover or reading a blurb that pulls you in for an emotional ride? Well, call me guilty on all charges. After finishing the prologue novella, Lost Prelude which left me in hot mess of tears, I knew I had to pick the second one up.

The book put me through an emotional wringer as I found myself feeling angry, sad and happy throughout. There were times I wanted to punch Alex for his decisions but I also felt sorry given the position he was in. To learn about the devastating truth and not to mention, meeting his family made me want to punch so many people in this book! My poor little heart hurt for Alex.

But it was Maya that totally gutted me with another round towards the last portion of the book. It left me feeling all emotional and raw reading those scenes, the poor girl couldn't catch a break. At that point, I wanted to wrangle Alex so bad and just give Maya a tight hug. Luckily things sorted out soon enough and we were gifted with a beautiful epilogue.

Overall this duet took me by surprise a lot given that I'm new to this author but I got caught into the whirlwind of this story before I knew what hit me. It's so rare when you come across a book by chance and you end up liking it but this was just one of those moments where everything came together well. It had angst, it was emotional and it all came together in one love story with two broken souls who found what they needed in each other. My only wish is that I wished we got more closure on some of the side characters.

I'm definitely looking forward to read more from this author in the future and I can't wait to see what she can bring to the table next.

Maya” I enjoyed the cat and mouse game
By mmbroussard
This is a combo review for both Lost Prelude and Lost Heartbeats. No spoilers give but I must state a proclaimer!!....
Lost Prelude MUST be read prior to Lost Heartbeats. They go hand in hand.

“I still feel it. Do you?”

I choose to read this series by the covers alone. I didn’t pay any attention to the synopsis before I quickly clicked buy and buy. I started reading instantly forgetting my list of reads I try to stick with. I could tell with in the first chapter that I would be telling my bookies to read this series and come the end of book one I was do that exact thing.

“Maybe at another time this could’ve turned into something.”
“I believe it’s already something, Maya”

I enjoyed the cat and mouse game. I enjoyed that Maya was strong but when that wall crashed I was thrilled Alexander was there. Lost Prelude was just the kind of start two characters need to hook you so you continue reading. Yes, Lost Prelude is exactly as it sounds, prelude…don’t expect a marriage proposal. But expect a ride that will have you smiling and gripping your legs!

“So you aren’t like how you are with me with other people?”
“Definitely not.”
“God, I like that.”

Something that I am fond of beside the connection as the characters fall is angst. I love feeling their love and their power behind it but I also LOVE to feel other things. The angst given, it starts in Lost Prelude but the majority you see in Lost Heartbeats had me one happy camper. Even though I was upset with Alexander at one of the monumental times in his relationship with Maya I loved it all the same. The torn feeling for doing something he had to do compared to what he should have done was felt so vividly. It’s all about the old and new. How to make it work. How to make one the priority.

“I missed you. I’m here because of you, and I want to stay because of you. Since the first day I saw you, I’ve been slowly falling for you, and I’ve decided that I’m going to keep you.”

Having Alexanders POV in Lost Heartbeats was a prize for me. I had wished for it in Lost Prelude just because I was a greedy reader and wanted in his head. But, now being finished with both, if we had his POV in Prelude the elusiveness of his character wouldn’t have impacted the storyline as it did. I really didn’t want ALL of those answers so quickly.

I hate long series about the same couple because 90% of the time book after book after book you lose why you love and fell for those characters and your love for the story is lessoned. I 100% believe with the fantastic writing, the incredibly built characters, and the distinctive falling type of love they have that I really could read more and more of Alexander and Maya. I loved how it all concluded and pleased with how their life has been fulfilled, I just want more. Plain and simple and I must say wanting more rather than screaming make it stop is a huge plus. I fell hard for these characters and their story, I fell for the unique storyline and I fell for the writing that sucked me in.

I’m falling for you a little more every time you give me your smile, sweetheart

Unforgettable 5 stars!!!!

Nature's Matrix: Linking Agriculture, Conservation and Food Sovereignty, by Ivette Perfecto, John Vandermeer, Angus Wright

Landscapes are frequently seen as fragments of natural habitat surrounded by a 'sea' of agriculture. But recent ecological theory shows that the nature of these fragments is not nearly as important for conservation as is the nature of the matrix of agriculture that surrounds them. Local extinctions from conservation fragments are inevitable and must be balanced by migrations if massive extinction is to be avoided. High migration rates only occur in what the authors refer to as 'high quality' matrices, which are created by alternative agroecological techniques, as opposed to the industrial monocultural model of agriculture. The authors argue that the only way to promote such high quality matrices is to work with rural social movements. Their ideas are at odds with the major trends of some of the large conservation organizations that emphasize targeted land purchases of protected areas. They argue that recent advances in ecological research make such a general approach anachronistic and call, rather, for solidarity with the small farmers around the world who are currently struggling to attain food sovereignty.

Nature's Matrix proposes a radically new approach to the conservation of biodiversity based on recent advances in the science of ecology plus political realities, particularly in the world's tropical regions.

Review

'This well written book is informed by sophisticated ecological theory applied to the complexities of modern tropical development in a dazzling critique of conventional thinking.' – Susanna Hecht, Professor of Urban Planning at the University of California, Berkeley and author of Fate of the Forest.

'Greens of every stripe – agro-ecologists, conservationists, regional planners – recognize the need for ecologically farmed areas, an empowered farm population, preserved areas in any sustainable, just and productive mosaic landscape. We all advocate this integration. This book does it.' – Richard Levins, Professor of Population Sciences at Harvard University and author of The Dialectical Biologist and Biology Under the Influence.

'Nature's Matrix makes the powerful case that sustainable peasant agriculture is a positive force for biodiversity conservation, contrary to a lot of misrepresentation in the literature. It is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the connections between food sovereignty and the environment.' – Peter Rosset, author of Food Is Different and Promised Land.

'As the authors demonstrate in this ground-breaking book, traditional agroecosystems not only offer promising models for other areas as they promote biodiversity, thrive without agrochemicals, and sustain year-round yields but are key for food sovereignty and the conservation of millions of wild species as they promote high quality matrices.' – Miguel Altieri, Professor at the University of California, Berkeley and author of Agroecology: The Science of Sustainable Agriculture.

'An excellent book, highly recommended.' – Agroforestry News.

'By providing analysis of how agriculture, conservation and biodiversity should be managed for the nutritional and social benefit of the majority, as well as the environmental security of the planet, Nature's Matrix offers policymakers, agronomists and ecologists much to ponder.' – New Agriculturist.

'An important publication that should be read by all ecologists, because the arguments are backed up with a considerable quantity of data.' – Janet Sprent, British Ecological Society, 2010.

'Hopefully books such as these will help the change from denial to holistic thinking.' – IZWA.

'This book is an important read for conservationists who are invited to adopt a landscape matrix perspective and aim for better understanding of the socio-economic and political forces that influence land use' – ORC Bulletin, Dec 2010.

The book is a very thorough compound of the history of agricultural ecology, and the reasons why is not sustainable for the planet to maintain the actual system of industrial agriculture. Really recommend it for anyone looking for diverse ways to help climate change and food sovereignty. It came in perfect conditions, the shipping was within the time suggested.

Small Farmers are the Future
By Missnorth
The park system is the prevailing model for biodiversity protection in the world - think Teddy R. and the US National Park Service; think Tanzania's Selous National Park, the biggest in the world. Armed guards, strict rules, "nature here, humans there". Biologists have long recognized that local extinctions were common, even in these big, dynamic parks, so "corridors" were the rage a few years ago, little pathways that would connect two "natural" areas to each other to allow migration (the solution to local extinction) - bridges over busy highways, for example. Most ecologists have found this approach hasn't worked.

Using a dazzling array of different disciplinary perspectives (biology, history, politics, anthropology), Perfecto et al. propose a "matrix" model of biodiversity protection that recognizes humans as potential stewards of the environment right where they live and work. Conservationists, they argue, have been blind to the political realities that drive extinction in the most sensitive regions, regions that happen to be in the poorest areas of the world. They focus their attention on agriculture, which has been such a destructive force in places like Brazilian Amazon. But they draw an important distinction between the Green Revolution-style industrial system usually encouraged by the global economic powers and the farming practiced by smallholders around the world. The latter, they argue, actually contribute to this matrix of biodiversity by showing more care for the land and thus conservationists should support and work closely with rural social movements that advocate for them.

The book cites two large case studies from Latin America from coffee farms in Central America and cocoa farms in Brazil. In both cases, the authors found a rich diversity of species living in and migrating through the farms. These farms practiced traditional and/or sustainable methods that involved the use of naturally occurring shade trees. Examples of maize farming in Mexico and wetland protection via rice fields in Southeast Asia are also provided. The authors make a well-developed argument that supporting such farms should be central to any conservation plan, especially in the developing world.

One minor criticism I have is the authors' somewhat incongruous choice of cash crop farms as a case study in arguing for food sovereignty. The methods practiced by these farmers is admirable, but they're still at the whim of global markets to a large extent. Farms provisioning food for local markets should play a bigger role in any discussion of food sovereignty. Nevertheless, the findings are hopeful and paradigm-rattling and will likely make conservationists and rural development practitioners rethink their methods.

Kokoro (Penguin Classics), by Natsume Soseki

The great Japanese author’s most famous novel, in its first new English translation in half a century

No collection of Japanese literature is complete without Natsume Soseki's Kokoro, his most famous novel and the last he completed before his death. Published here in the first new translation in more than fifty years, Kokoro—meaning "heart"—is the story of a subtle and poignant friendship between two unnamed characters, a young man and an enigmatic elder whom he calls "Sensei." Haunted by tragic secrets that have cast a long shadow over his life, Sensei slowly opens up to his young disciple, confessing indiscretions from his own student days that have left him reeling with guilt, and revealing, in the seemingly unbridgeable chasm between his moral anguish and his student's struggle to understand it, the profound cultural shift from one generation to the next that characterized Japan in the early twentieth century.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Kokoro is the great Japanese modern novel. The last its author completed, published in 1914, two years before his death at 48, it voices the spiritual desolation of a society that had deliberately transformed itself from quasi-feudal isolation to determinedly modern player on the world stage in little more than 50 years. The never-named narrator-hero of the novel’s first half is a provincial student in Tokyo who befriends a man some 20 years older whom he meets on a beach that is a favorite student getaway site. Well-mannered, educated, comfortable, ostensibly happily married though childless, the man, whom the narrator regularly visits once they’re both back in the city, yet exudes sadness. In the book’s second half, narrated by Sensei (i.e., mentor), as the student calls him, we learn why: he feels he betrayed a friend by first pressing his suit for the woman both love. Translator McKinney, who makes a completely stylistically modern—verbally and syntactically plain, realistic, personally voiced, intimate in tone—English-language novel of this quietly profound masterpiece, imparts in her introduction all that non-Japanese need to know to appreciate why the book is considered a national treasure. It is an international modernist treasure through sharing the aching, regretful sensibility of such works as Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises and Ingmar Bergman’s arguably greatest film, Winter Light. --Ray Olson

Review
"This elegant novel...suffuses the reader with a sense of old Japan." —Los Angeles Times

"Soseki is the representative modern Japanese novelist, a figure of truly national stature." —Haruki Murakami

As well as his works of fiction, his essays, haiku, and kanshi have been influential and are popular even today.

Penguin has offered a lovely translation ~
By Christopher Barrett
I checked this out as an eBook from my local library since the only hard copies were the previous translations. For those who sigh at another translation, remember that Kokoro, like many classic novels are public domain of sorts. Any publisher can copy the work as long as they credit the author and don't change the original. For translations the rules are a bit more flexible. But Penguin decided they would rather translate the original than pay another publisher for the rights to their translation. I think that's fair. It's like Beethoven. You don't have to pay to use the music, but if you use someone's recording of said Beethoven piece, you need to pay them.

Kokoro is an interesting novel. It is broken down into 3 parts. It is interesting that the chapters are all nearly identical length, about 2 pages each chapter in this version. So there are 110 chapters. But it's not a terribly long read.

The first section deals with the protagonist and his relationship with 'sensei', a seemingly well to do older man. They become acquaintances and finally develop an almost father-son relationship. The second part deals with the protagonist's father who is dying and his relationship with the family. The final section is actually a memoir sent to the protagonist by 'sensei' detailing the events of his younger life and shedding light on some of the mystery behind 'sensei'.

This translation is pretty amazing. I don't read Japanese (at least Kanji though I can read some hiragana pretty well), but I do understand much of the Japanese language. It is difficult to translate not because of the actual words, but because Japanese is subject-object-verb instead of subject-verb-object as in English. So if you literally translate you will sound like Yoda. "I, to this location, must now go," and such. So it is interesting that this translation seems to have less fluff than other translations. Japanese is a relatively straightforward style of writing, focusing on precision and emphasis on more emotions from fewer words. I think this translation caught the original Japanese style and kept the sentences shorter and crisper with more emphasis on the key words and phrases and less on lengthy adjectives. Also, Soseki likes to keep is characters vague and nameless (sounds a lot like a modern Japanese author I know), so they seem to have more mystique. Although it is believed that the 'sensei' character was based at least in part on Soseki himself.

Natsume Soseki is considered the father of modern Japanese literature. He was in what I like to call the Japanese Algonquin Tatami (I totally made it up but it kind of fits). It was a group of talented, though seemingly radical authors in the first half of the 20th century in Japan. Soseki traveled to England and developed a number of neurosis there and upon his return to Japan. His works are peppered with satirical elements, this novel less so than others such as 'I am a Cat'. But I mention this so that folks understand a bit of his influence to his writing. We was definitely a critic of the 'modern' Japanese society of the early 1900s.

I would HIGHLY recommend reading Botchan first. Botchan is Soseki's Huck Finn if you will. It is widely praised for its quality, its flow, and its interesting and very smart alecky protagonist. I actually equate the protagonist to Holden Caufield from Catcher in the Rye. Kokoro is among Soseki's most serious novels and is cited as a major influence by many great Japanese authors such as Yukio Mishima.

Fun fact: Natsume Soseki graced the 1000 yen bank note from 1984 to 2004. Wouldn't it be cool to have Mark Twain and Edgar Allen Poe on US bills?

A Touching Japanese Classic
By Modest_Type
This is the first novel I've read by Natsume Soseki, and my first Japanese novel at that. Although I haven't read another translation, the novel is beautifully written, being succinct yet flowery and powerful at times. Certain lines clearly and powerfully convey the feelings of Meiji Japan. Some recurring themes, such as the animosity between younger and older generations, are still relevant today. Additionally, the fact that this novel takes place in Japan during the Meiji period means it effectively captures the contrast between city and rural life. To me, this book is one I'll treasure forever; it has affected me deeply, compelling me to question my own development as a student, as well as my relationship with my father.

Additionally, because I am a casual reader I was delighted to discover that every chapter is approximately 2 pages long.

Overall, Kokoro is a Japanese classic that offers an emotional and compelling read.

which translation matters
By alm50
Everyone agrees Kokoro is a masterpiece of modern Japanese literature but for English readers the quality of translation from the Japanese is crucial. It should be noted that the translation of Kokoro Schwalbe chose for "The End of the World Book Club" was by Edwin McClellan, whose translations of Soseki are celebrated, not the translator of the Penguin edition. Newer is not always better.
