Love it!

I already owned the same book, but the Basic English one. I have used it so much, that decided to try this one. So now I use both, one which focuses more on grammar and vocabulary and this one (English Conversation) that focuses on day to day pertinent situations. It has many great exercises and thorough explanations for common American sayings. Although I agree that perhaps a student will never hear some them, I do focus on those that are quite common. Yes and the students enjoy them a lot or say, "oh so that's what that meant.

But what I love the most about this book is that every chapter has a dialogue. I literary own a library of I don't know how many teaching English books and I don't know why, most of them just bring a dialogue or two! Dialogues for me are essential for role playing, improving reading/pronunciation skills, etc. And in my case (English is not my first language), I have surprisingly learned a thing or two with these books. Highly recommend it, bought used and arrived like new!

About the Author
Bennett L. Schwartz got his Ph.D. in 1993 from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. Since then he has been at Florida International University in Miami, Florida, where he is currently Professor of Psychology and a Fellow of the Honors College. He is author or editor of 8 books as well as over 50 journal articles and chapters. His textbook, Memory: Foundations and Applications, 2nd edition (Sage Publications) was published in 2014. At FIU, he has won several teach awards and currently teaches courses in Memory,Cognition and Sensation and Perception. His main research area is metacognition, but he has also conducted research in areas as diverse as visual percepton to evolutionary psychology to the language of thought to memory in non-human primates. Schwartz also serves on the editorial board of several journals and recently served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Research in Memory And Cognition.

These arrangements are almost all slightly beyond the simplest tune-only arrangements in most books. 23 different songs. Includes chords and lyrics. Nice back page reference of Mandolin Notation symbols. If you want a Christmas collection that's beyond the beginner books (but not terribly advanced), you will like this.

Very Nice Arrangements of Christmas Music for the Mandolin

I bought a few of the Christmas Music for Mandolin books here at amazon. This is the only one that I felt was very helpful. The others mainly provide the melody line and chords, which I can get from a bazillion other Christmas collection books. This one provided some very nice arrangements for the mandolin, using double stops, tremelos, etc. I played one of the arrangements in church this morning and they loved it.

China seems to be suffering from growing pains, caused no doubt as a reflection of its massive growth and internal change in recent times, with its interaction with the rest of the world coming back and being amplified. Just like a teenager, it has believed it is invincible and yet there is still a lot of change awaiting it, some good, some bad…

This book provides a great, credible look at China and considers how the country is developing, changing and interacting with the west. With power comes responsibility and in many ways the country has an unenviable balancing act to achieve. It still needs its partners around the world, they may still need or desire them, yet it has to look also closer to home as the world’s fastest growing economy and largest population mean that the potential for change and reverberated impact is great. Can China learn to trust and embrace the west? Can this largesse be reciprocated?

The author has done a lot of research, discussing with experts in many areas of finance, politics, economics and education to look at how the west currently views and evaluates China and, of course, vice versa. It all made for an engaging, informative book. It shows that adjustment and change may be required by both sides yet the jury is out if both sides will be prepared to make reasonable accommodations. Time and circumstances will tell.

There are no wild-eyed forecasts or predictions contained within the book, just a fairly open, clear and articulate look at matters. It can be an ideal book for anyone who has more than a passing interest in economics, politics or just current affairs.

Based on his interviews with entrepreneurs, students, politicians, laborers, diplomats, social workers, prostitutes, shopkeepers, writers, government officials and China experts in Germany, France, the United States, the Netherlands, Italy and elsewhere, and on his wide reading in research literature in English, French, German and Dutch, Obbema has produced a very interesting book on how in his view the Western countries should look at and deal with China today.

The Secret Bunker set a quick pace towards a culmination of events with a meeting of all the main characters and left me gripped along the way. It's not often I pre order the next book but I did in this case, there's no way I'm missing what happens next.

... Paul manages to provide an authentic teenage voice for his prime character all the way through. Looking forward to seeing what comes in the second of the trilogy which I've already pre-ordered, need I say more?

Really enjoyed this adventure seen through the eyes of the teenage lead character - his voice was so true and compelling. I'm looking forward to reading the others and would rather like to go and visit the real bunker!

What gave you the idea for The Secret Bunker Trilogy?

We'd been on a trip to Anstruther in Fife, UK and needed a rainy day activity for the kids.

Among the leaflets in our holiday cottage was one advertising Scotland's Secret Bunker.

It was built to help safeguard Scotland during the Cold War in the event of a nuclear attack.

The Secret Bunker lies 100 feet underground and is the size of two football pitches.

It's an amazing place and we had a great visit, though the story idea didn't follow for some time afterwards.

What made you start writing the trilogy?

I'd spotted a writing competition online which was being run by Chicken House Publishing.

My wife, my sister and one of my children had expressed an interest in writing, so I passed the competition to them.

It only needed 5000 words to get started, so I guess this must have started percolating in my head.

I woke up one morning with a very dramatic opening to a story.

It was an image of somebody getting trapped in the bunker while their loved ones were running towards them.

The huge bunker doors slammed shut, separating them, and I began to wonder what might have caused that to happen.

I jumped out of bed and wrote the beginning of the story.

It was much easier than I thought it would be to write a series of three books, I really enjoyed ramping up the level of jeopardy in each one.

The final book of The Secret Bunker Trilogy. This story has it all, aliens, secret plots, Armageddon, Nuclear War, and an unlikely group hidden beneath the surface of Earth in a Cold War secret bunker.

This series is well written and interesting, it kept me guessing throughout the whole story. I really enjoyed this series and can't wait to see what Teague comes up with next. You owe it to yourself to read this series.

Two times the terrifying time periods!

Although aimed at younger readers, the Horrible Histories books are jam packed with weird, gross and morbid history trivia that is sure to entertain all ages. I bought this book because I was interested in writing a story set in the Victorian era and wanted a real feel for what life back then was like, not just the sanitized version that most textbooks and television show. Getting the Gorgeous Georgians on top of the Vile Victorians was a pleasant bonus.

A MUST FOR BUDDING ARCHITECTS

I have given architectural students copies of the Honeywood trilogy over many years.The books are classics and explain some difficulties a young architect can encounter in his quest for excellence under difficult circumstances.

Most of the first book is centered upon letters to and from the architect's file,which is amusing to read but not so amusing for the architect or his client.

Homebuilding and Human Nature

Building a home, or anything else for that matter, requires you to do business with a wide range of people, bankers, landowners, officials, builders, tradesmen and even architects. An understanding of how to deal with varied human natures is therefore valuable, and will make the project go more smoothly.
Such understanding is best acquired in the University of Life, as there are very few good textbooks. However, there is one book that was specifically written to illuminate the interpersonal difficulties that arise when building a home. Although "The Honeywood File" was first published in 1929 and describes the construction of a country mansion for Sir Leslie Brash in the English county of Kent it deals primarily with human nature, and human nature does not change. Nor do many of the practical mishaps and changes of mind that can arise when building a home. My copy is dated 1972, but confirmation of the timelessness and universal relevance of this book is provided by its recent republication in the USA.
"The Honeywood File" is in the form of an amusing exchange of letters between Sir Leslie, his architect James Spinlove and a range of more or less honest major and minor characters. After reading it you may decide that the best way to approach your project is to appoint an architect, but even if you don't you will still be better equipped to deal with the vagaries of human nature.

A trip back in time

"The Honeywood File" is composed in a series of letters between the architect and Sir Brash, a man interested in constructing his dream mansion in the county of Kent. It is amusing, full of English humor and wit and easily transports the reader back to days of genteel manners and cordial letter-writing. A definite keeper, and a book well worth reading!
