About the Author

Robin Hard is the author of The Routledge Handbook of Greek Mythology (2003) and the translator and editor of Apollodorus' Library of Greek Mythology (1997) and Diogenes' Sayings and Anecdotes (2012) for Oxford World's Classics, as well as the translator of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations (OWC, 2011), with introduction and notes by Christopher Gill.

Christopher Gill has written extensively on ancient philosophy, especially on Hellenistic and Roman ethics and psychology. He is the editor of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, tr. Robin Hard, for Oxford World's Classics.

Superior to All other Translations Except the Loeb

I have never written a review for amazon but this book is exactly what I have wanted for many years.

There are so many good points that I will will just list them by number.
1. compact other translations are too large the size of the book is perfect to put in a bag or carry along easily when you go on the bus.
2. translation does not have typos - if you have read the English only translation based off of George Long's older one there are so many typos that it is annoying. But this book is proofread and very well done. Also because the other one is public domain you can get some really weird formatted books, but this book is well laid out and easy to read.
3. the translation it self is really good, but I like Oldfather's a little bit more, but that said since I can not read Greek it is nice just having an only English format like in this book.
4. great notes on each Discourse following AA Long nice book where he put many nice ideas about Epictetus's thinking in the translation of just the 1st book, this one follows the lead and there are many great additional notes nicely put at the end of the book instead of on the bottom.

So if you love Epictetus then you will probably love this book. I know I will recommend it highly to all of my friends.

Best translation of Epictetus

Previous translations of Epictetus' Discourses and Enchiridion are stuffy and strange in parts. Robin Hard's translation manages to both preserve the original meanings as well as be very understandable for the contemporary reader.

Reading the Discourses, it's as if you are in Epictetus' philosophical school in Ancient Rome, learning to become a Stoic. If you are interested in Stoicism and potentially living as a Stoic, Epictetus' Discourses -- and this translation specifically -- is the place to get the juicy philosophical ideas in their full glory. Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, while wonderful, does not portray a complete philosophy but only the journal entries of a practitioner. Seneca's letters, while eloquent and wise, are a mix of Stoic and Epicurean thinking and thus sacrifice the purity of hard core Stoicism found in Epictetus.

I highly recommend reading this edition of the Discourses slowly, contemplating their meaning and how you might apply them into your daily life, then using the Handbook as it was intended: as a summary of the key points in the Discourses.

I think it's a great rundown of Stoicism

I read Oxford Press books whenever possible. I think, overall, they have the most accurate yet modern translations.

I suggest reading the "Handbook" portion of the book first, (it's located at the end). I think it's a great rundown of Stoicism. It gives mental exercises, and a kind of brief genealogical of stoic thought. The Discourse portion provides a deeper explanation in essay format.

"You are an intelligent spider sitting on your web. Early morning light forms tiny rainbows as it passes through the beads of dew strung along the filaments composing your hard-earned handiwork. Why beads? What happened to the water in between each drop? To answer this question, our eight-legged intellectual must first gain an understanding of how liquids such as water actually wet surfaces and why such liquids fail to wet other surfaces. The problem encompasses such subjects as liquids rising up capillary tubes, paint spreading on solid surfaces or liquids spreading on other liquids, the fascinating subject of bubble formation and stability, and why water streams down some surfaces and forms droplets on other surfaces. De Gennes (CollÃ¨ge ((College) de France; Institute Curie), Brochard-Wyart (Institut Curie), and QuÃ©rÃ© (Quere) (CollÃ¨ge ((College) de France) have written an excellent treatise on these phenomena that opens with a very poetic introduction relating esoteric concepts to everyday observations, and includes chapter references, historical sketches, and a very good discussion of each problem at chapter beginnings. For readers with backgrounds in mathematics, physics, and chemistry, although it is not beyond advanced undergraduates in the sciences and technological fields. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Intuitive, elegant, insightful, beautiful!

Capillarity and Wetting Phenomena, like every text and paper bearing the name of de Gennes is intuitive, insightful, elegant, beautiful and extremely useful text. The names de Gennes, Brochard and David Quere are well known to the researchers in this area, and this book basically brings together their deep insight about a host of different phenomena in very simple words and equations. The described physics of wetting, surface tension, droplet spreading, instabilities, bubbles, etc. is developed in a style where qualitative arguments, dimensional arguments and experimental observations are used to describe a variety of complex phenomena. The apparent lack of mathematical rigor is a blessing to everyone interested in developing a taste and temperament for this extremely important field. While one can find several related texts in the field, none other is written in this delightfully insightful way. This is one of the rare gems that everyone from a high school student to most advanced researcher in the field can read, enjoy, learn from and be delighted to possess.

Awfull Translation

I had the original in French, and got the English version trying to understand it faster. I was very dissapointed when I found phrases as:

"The puddle is the seat of a certain internal pressure p_2>0"

A puddle being a seat? I just don't catch the metaphore. The original in french says,

"Il existe une certaine pression interne p_2>0"

Which is, as you can googletranslate, "There is some internal pressure p_2> 0".

Very useful and easy to read!

This is a great book for anyone interested in capillarity and wetting phenomena. What I like about it is that it gives the reader a grasp of how things work and it goes through a lot of practical examples. The equations are voluntarily simplified (constants often omitted) to only leave the important variables and reveal the "mechanics of how things work". However, although the equations look simple, they do capture the essence of the problem and they are always perfectly sound. This is an approach that de Gennes uses a lot and which I believe makes things easier to understand. Moreover, the 3 authors of the book are, like the previous reviewer said, very well known and respected scientist in their field, which adds to the scientific soundness of their approach. In summary, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the physics of wetting.

advanced topics in regression with emphasis on model selection

Frank Harrell is a Professor who does a lot of consulting in medical research. This book covers a wide variety of topics in regression analysis including many advanced techniques including data reduction, smoothing techniques, variable selection, transformations, shrinkage methods, tree-based methods and resampling. But note the title "Regression Modeling Strategies". Unlike most advanced texts in regression this book emphasizes modeling strategies. So the focus is on things like variable selection and other techniques to avoid overfitting models and diagnostics to look for violations in assumptions such as variance homogeneity or normality and independence of residuals, or stability problems like colinearity.
The book covers an extensive collection of modern techniques for exploratory data analysis. Inferential methods are also considered and he deals appropriately with important issues (particularly for medical research) such as imputation of missing values. Many examples are considered and illustrated in S-PLUS.

Harrell also provides many rules of thumb based on his own experience building models. A lot of the techniques are illustrated using data from the Titanic where it is interesting to see which factors affected the probability of survival. My only disappointment was that there is perhaps too much emphasis on this one particular data set.

A standard regression text would be expected to include linear and nonlinear regression. Harrell goes much deeper including nonparametric regression, logistic regression and survival models (e.g. the Cox proportional hazards model).

Practical and insightful

This is a very special statistics book and is unlike any other that I have encountered. Instead of being focused on a specific statistical technique (or family of techniques), Harrell presents a wholistic view of regression modeling for describing real datasets. He starts with the basics of regression assumptions and techniques (splines, shrinkage, etc...), moves on to data management (imputation and reduction), and then addresses the specifics of linear regression, binary logistic regression, ordinal logistic regression, parametric survival regression and Cox regression. Each regression method is approached first with a clear explanation of what the technique is doing and what the critical assumptions are. Then, Harrell demonstrates how to do the analysis in S-Plus/R using a real dataset.

Though I lack the advanced mathematical background necessary to fully explore many statistical textbooks, I did not find this to be a problem for this one. The presentation is that of a teacher: clear with developed reasoning. The production of nomograms was a particularly useful exercise and the S-plus code was also very useful.

I find his opinions on model building strategies to be well though out and persuasive...though I suspect that many may find them controversial. Overall, this is one of the best statistics books that I have purchased.

Mixed feelings

I feel uneasy about giving an unimpressive rating to what is undoubtedly a substantial and original book - and, behind it, a substantial and useful (and widely used) library of R code - but at the same time know why it could not have been higher.

One star went due to the $120 price tag - I do not insist on costs-plus pricing for books, but notice when the $100 line is crossed - and the 2010 edition being only a re-print of the 2001 original, complete with an out-of-date correspondence e-mail address.

Beyond this, I can start from the author's suggesting his book to master's and PhD biostatistics students, a proposition which I find unhelpful. My statistics background is associated with econometrics, where "Econometric analysis" by Greene is a popular first-year graduate textbook, and let me say this - Greene's is a textbook, Harrell's is not. (By the way, another popular econometrics textbook is Hayashi's, which has a distinct approach, stressing the method of moments. I do not believe that Harrell's book even mentions MM or GMM. Same story with Bayesian modeling. A statistics education based on "Regression modeling strategies" would be a highly incomplete one).

With regard to the book being promoted to "data analysts and statistical methodologists", I will express scepticism about value for statistical methodologists - in 2001, when the book came out, and certainly in 2012 and beyond - and advise "data analysts" to definitely take a look (especially if you are working with survival analysis), but not consider it a "regression bible". I have not been especially impressed with presentation, but was in many cases surprised by the author's odd (to me) choice of emphasis and ordering - variable clustering and principal-component regression? Splines on first pages, and MLE in Chapter 9? - and important omissions. I believe that a contemporary survey of regression modeling would look quite different from Harrell's.

Greene's is, again, a great textbook - I see a used copy of a fairly recent edition selling for $10! - and I wholeheartedly agree with another reviewer's suggestion of "Data analysis using regression and multilevel/hierarchical models" by Gelman and Hill. "Modern regression techniques using R" by Wright is in a different weight category, but is a nice, R-aided introduction.

You can take this book to the bank!

If your seeking to get into the concert promotion business who should you learn from, someone who has been there and done it or someone who's a good writer.

Hal Davidson is the real deal, he's an active Festival Consultant and Promoter working in the business. He promoted Stompin 76 still remembered as the Woodstock of Bluegrass back in 1976 and he was 21 years old at the time. He has without a doubt the best book on Concert Promotion out there take my word for it. So if you're in the concert business get this book.

Reads like a conversation.

Well the book arrived with the CDR of some XLS and WRD docs.
It's a great read, written with passion. It's almost a confession at times.
Hal know this business and he shares his experince in ways that a layman can understand.
The "book" is clearly self published, it's actually a brick of A4 with a binder pobably made at home by the man himself.
Respect that!
Although there are overlaps the book is specifically written for the N.American market.

However I bought several books and this by far was the best.

I cannot believe all the information packed into this book! Now I am ready to take on the world of concert promoting. The forms and CD are a great bonus! The author gives us EVERYTHING we need to know to take on the art of organizing a profitable and enjoyable event. I love that he has the experience and knowledge, and that he is willing to share it with us. You will not be sorry investing in this manual. This is "THE" building block to success.

Kishor C. Mehta, Ph.D., P.E., Horn Professor of Civil Engineering, is the founder and former director of Wind Science and Engineering Research Center at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas. He served as chairman of the ASCE 7 Task Committee on Wind Loads for ASCE 7-88 and ASCE 7-95. He is lead author of ASCE guides to the use of wind load provisions of ASCE 7-95, ASCE 7-98, ASCE/SEI 7-02, and ASCE/SEI 7-05. William L. Coulbourne, P.E., is Director of Wind and Flood Hazard Mitigation for the Applied Technology Council, with his office located in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. He is a member of the ASCE 7 Wind Load Task Committee and the ASCE 7 Main Committee, and he coauthored the wind loads guide to ASCE/SEI 7-05.

Good Book, Weird Happenings

Contains SPOILERS !!!!!

First of All, I'd like to say I love salvatore's books and read all the Drizzt saga from the very begining. And certainly I will continue to read them as soon as he writes more books.

I read this book in less then a week... and have some notes I would like to share.

First of all, although the book is pretty cool... I found the regis/wulgar travel to morada topolino kind of boring and I had to force myself to keep reading.

Second, The Drizzt part where he is in Yellow Rose monastery is quite boring as well and purposeless... since Yvonel tells jarlexle he cant be cured that way.

Third, We fall on Yvonel issue. When Salvatore introduced Yvonel Baeren in previous books I was very excited. She was such a powerful and rich character... I would like to know everything about her including the mystery regarding her looks (Wich as it seemed, looked like the ideal of beauty of each person)

When Salvatore introduced her impatience with the Priestess and Matron Mothers I got it as well... It seemed logical for me that such a inteligent and powerful creature would find the all others priestess lesser beings... petty creatures...
I understood too when she got intrigued with Drizzt and his nature and why she felt so atttracted by him... because drizzt was something she could never have. I could easely picture Lolth being pulled by the same strings...
When Ivonnel decided to leave mazzoberranzan... I imagined that she was intrigued by the mysteries of the world above and to feel the freedom Jarlexle experienced....... that she would fake her goodness and so learn a lot... so in the future she would come back and become the most powerfull and wise matron mother ever seen...

But saddly Salvatore didnt get this route... he made her quickly change her nature and alignment... to the most bizarre scene where drizt is dying and she starts almost crying praying for Lolth give her a miracle to save drizzt... going so far as to say "I know you care about him"...

Even Lolth got dragged by Salvatore thirst for redemptiom... and hinted Lolth was touched by Drizzt speech.....

Thats completely unrealistc ... Lolth is Evil... Lolth is Trickery... She cares about no one ... This is her way and Drows ways...

It would be much more realistic if in that scene where Lolth appeared, she tried to harm him and Millieken or Corellon interveined

Unrealistic too is the change of nature of Gromph Baenre... who is known by his lack of humor and his extremely egoistic behavior... I understand Gromph suffers the presence of "lesser beings" just because he wants the tower of arcane... and because he has nowhere to go...
But I wouldnt go so far as to have gromph friendly seated and eating and joking in a Dwarven Hall....

I didnt get too the Yochlol scolding Yvonel for always following the "clever path" ... Since trickery is her main domain... One would expect lolth admiring cleverness... the Yochlol should be delighted for her clever plans and not mad about this...

*Spoiler-free* Overall very enjoyable and a sweet ending

Not sure if there will be another Drizzt book - if so then this one could well serve as a sweet ending to an epic journey with Drizzt.

Salvatore ties it up neatly in the end - where while it was frustrating and painful to read about Drizzt's mental turmoil, the elements contribute to an ultimate end. That without some of the experiences of Drizzt that would not have been able to do what he was able to do.

Some characters definitely took an unexpected turn. Though she logic behind said turns is explained - though some of did feel a little bit of a stretch. On the full redemption: That has been in the works for a very long time and entirely believable, he was there anyway and it started back near Gauntlgrym. For the other semi-redemptions I can see that too though it would require an uncharacteristic open mindedness about themselves and their actions. Though those also have the realization that the continuation would damn them to hell of repetitious tedium with only losses to show for it.

Some might find the ending a tad too kumbaya/saccharin, and it makes me wonder that if Bob were to continue writing Drizzt books where he'd go. Are there any major enemies left? If continued on beyond a short story, it would really take a fast forward of at least 20 years for new credible threats to enter.

I would like a short story expanding on the re-introduction at the end.

A fitting end to an incredible journey of 33 books and 26 years.

It seems like there are no plans for a direct sequel (or any other Drizzt books) in the near future, but I am desperately hoping for more. There are so many stories left to tell: what of Entreri and Dahlia, Catti-Brie, and Wulfgar in the coming decades? Drizzt and Catti-Brie's child? Regis and Donnola? Drizzt's return to the Monastery of the Yellow Rose? And the possibilities with Yvonnel, Zak, and the ever-interesting Jarlaxle? Please let there be more. Even if it takes years, we will wait.
