A terrific reference and overview for the guitarist

All of you guitarists who are into home recording (or thinking about it) should check out this book. It is a very broad, comprehensive look at recording. What's different about this book is that rather than being for producers or engineers, this one REALLY IS sharply focused on the guitarist's perspective. It covers every aspect of recording guitar, and while it doesn't go too deep in any one area, it does a GREAT job on zeroing-in on the KEY aspects of each subject (including some of the juicy secrets and tricks).
There's a lot of material covered, but the book's organizational stucture is both brilliantly logical, and simple -- it traces the whole signal path from guitar to the final output media. And the book is so well-written, clear, concise that it also makes a good cover-to-cover read.
There is some material geared toward the professional studio session man that is probably overkill for most of us. But in these cases, this is interesting reading nontheless, and there ARE details in the material you can apply to your own situation. There is also material geared to the "home recording" hobbiest. More importantly, there's a lot of info that ANY guitarist will find valuable in ANY recording situation.
If you're like me and have spent some time in studios and home recording, there's a lot of info here that you probably already know, but what I found was that it contained a LOT of very usful little details that you typically only learn through experience. And it doesn't bog you down with a lot of stuff you won't ever need to know. So if you're new to recording and feel overwhelmed, this is a GREAT place to start--there's a TON of value here.
For me, I found that it reinforces some things I already knew. But since there is SO MUCH to absorb and retain about recording, I don't mind getting that positive reinforcement--it keeps me sharp. But more importantly, I find it fills in some of the gaps and details where I might know something conceptually, but not how to achieve it.
And while there's a lot of "food for thought" there is also plenty stuff of a practical reference nature, like micing techniques, tables of delay settings and artificial harmonics, etc.
Note: The book is more geared toward more traditional guitar recording methods than to plugging a DMA direcly into 4 track. But even if that's your approach, there's a lot of stuff here that's applicable and worth knowing.
Whether you know a lot or a little it's hard to go wrong with this one.

I agree with everything the August 15, 2001 reviewer said and add the following:
I also appreciated Jon's inclusion of the equipment used by studio guitarist Carl Verheyen. I also loved the section that discusses what effect pedals and amplifiers were used by many guitar greats to get their own "classic and trademark" sounds.(Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, etc.)
The chapter that shows some personal studios of some famous guitarists was neat as were the quotes from these individuals(Alex Liefson). The book also describes how one can make some great digital recordings when away from home or the studio.
If you play guitar and care anything about recording your own music or just love recorded music, this book is a must buy.

Beautiful

When Belle, a foster child, is being placed with Tess she's finally found a good home. Soon another child, Jim, joins them. Jim and Belle are best friends. They're so close and they love each other very much. When Jim's mother is able to take care of her son again they lose touch. After many years Jim comes back to Dublin to find Belle. They immediately reconnect and their love is deeper than ever.

Jim and Belle want to be foster parents themselves. Their door is always open for children who need them. When Belle has to say goodbye to a child she really loves she's going through a tough time. It's almost Christmas, but she isn't in the mood to celebrate. When she wishes she'd never been born something happens to her, something that will change her entire outlook on life...

Every Time a Bell Rings is beautiful in so many ways. Tess, Jim and Belle are wonderful people and they have such good hearts. I truly admire every loving and caring foster parent. I think it's fantastic that Carmel Harrington has chosen this as a topic for her book. It's definitely a topic that deserves some extra attention.

I love romantic stories, especially when true love is involved. This Christmas story is so special. I didn't want it to end and loved every word. Every Time a Bell Rings has a gorgeous cover. Both the outside and the inside of the book are filled with love and joy. It's exactly what a good Christmas book should be like. It has the right spirit and I really enjoyed the story. I was singing Christmas songs and I'm already in a Christmas mood just because of this book. I think Carmel Harrington is a great writer and I love her work.

A Warm, Witty Holiday Read. Recommended!

My first Christmas read of 2015 is Carmel Harrington's EVERY TIME A BELL RINGS. I was eager to read this book after having loved BEYOND GRACE'S RAINBOW and THIS LIFE YOU LEFT. On top of that, this novel is an homage to the film "It's a Wonderful Life," and I, like so many people, found the questions raised by that classic to be life-changers. Harrington skillfully borrows the envelope from the movie, while adding both a modern-day perspective and a woman's point of view.

I will admit that I had a bit of trepidation regarding the sometimes dark threads of the story. Since I've had kids, and experienced the loss of my mother, I'm not as tough as I used to be. I no longer read "children in peril" novels such as the ones I read when I was an English major. I assumed based on the film, that the end would be happy, and that ultimately the story would be uplifting. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that I was correct.

The story centers on Belle, a tossed-around, often-forgotten, bi-racial child of the foster care system whose longest-term relationships include a mother who never wanted to see her born, and a cold, clinical social worker named Mrs. O'Reilly. She trusts no one but the one constant in her life, her beloved doll Dee Dee. When we meet the young Belle, she has stopped speaking altogether. This is understandable as she is not used to "having a voice." She has never been allowed to make choices or have opinions, and saying what she thinks has never gotten her anywhere good.

Enter Tess, a veteran foster mother who understands broken children, but sees past the shards to their humanity. She allows Belle the space she needs, and offers her a safe haven. She intuits that what Belle needs, in addition to a real loving mother, is a friend who is made of flesh and blood, not plastic. She takes in Jim, a foster kid who faces the pain of his mother's mental illness. She loves him, but is incapable of caring for him, so Tess steps in to bridge the gap.

The three form a bond of family that is as strong as blood, and find comfort in one another. When Jim has to rejoin his birth mother, Belle tries hard to be happy for him, but it's another loss for which she doesn't have the strength. She and Tess manage to get through the pain, and Belle makes it to adulthood, buoyed up by her foster mother's (real mother's. actually, despite the accident of birth) wisdom, kindness, and practicality. I love the scenes between Belle and Tess when the roles reverse. Belle constantly tries to convince Tess to give up her sneaky cigarettes and eat a green vegetable or two instead of the fried food and chocolates she lives on. I love the fact that Tess is three-dimensional, and not a cookie-cutter saint. Her flaws add rich depth to her character.

Belle winds up married and happy with foster children of her own. She loves them all, but it's a girl with a doll who reminds her of herself who steals her heart completely. At the climax of the book, we relax, thinking that Belle finally has every piece of her dream in place: Money, Home, Husband, Children, Family, Pregnancy. When fate intervenes to challenge Belle, she is simply too tired to fight, and contemplates doing herself a harm by jumping off the very bridge in Dublin where she got engaged. (Wait till you read about her "ring.")

A little girl with qualities that Belle cannot fathom steps in to help Belle sift through the aspects of her life that she can't accept. She gets a supernatural lesson in the powers of goodness and love to triumph over pain, cruelty, and deprivation.

I'm writing this carefully to avoid spoilers, but I want to call out a particular character whom I loved named Bobby. A troubled older child,of the kind that don't always wind up with happy situations in foster care, is taken in by Belle and her husband. The boy turns into a man, and a good solid one at that, after being bolstered by the love of Belle and her husband under the guidance of "Grandma" Tess. I love how he turns out, because he's still a man of the streets, to an extent. While he has chosen light over dark, we can still see sly remnants of the tools he used as a survivor when he was a kid. I adore how multi-dimensional Bobby is.

I did cry many times while I read this book. And some scenes still haunt me. It's unimaginable that people can be cruel to children, but sadly, it's a part of many adults' experience. The compelling part of the story is to see how people can overcome their beginnings, and how little it can take to turn someone from the wrong path to the right.

The ending was perfect, and it was the HEA that my heart needed. When I shut down my Kindle, I lay in bed weeping on my pillow, but it was a good, clean kind of weeping. I had fully invested in Belle's tale, and I can move on knowing she's fine.

Extra stars for wit and humor, a great conversational tone, and a lovely portrait of Dublin. Recommended! (less)

Everyone needs a Nora in their life now and again

I felt as if Tess was the backbone of the story, perhaps even more so than Belle. She is the person who forms and loves the adult Belle grows up to be. Through all the disappointment, neglect and heartbreak Belle always has Tess holding her up and pushing her forward.
It must be incredibly hard for both foster parents and foster children to say goodbye when the children return to their parents, especially when they have managed to form a bond. Not all foster parents do it for the right reasons, but those who really care can change the lives of children in dire need of support and love.
Harrington draws upon the plot of It's a Wonderful Life quite a bit. In a way it makes the story seem more nostalgic. In essence the moral of the story is to acknowledge how lucky we are and to be happy for what we have instead of wanting what we might never be able to have.
I think we are all guilty from time to time of not being able to understand that we may be luckier than we think. Belle is stuck in her obsession of Lauren. The bond has grown into something that could be viewed as detrimental for a foster child, who eventually has to return to their biological parents.

The Authoritative Work on Mental Training

This book is accessible and pertinent to anyone who wants to perform more consistently and effectively. While it focuses on sports, it has a number of useful lessons that can be applied to any aspect of life. The book sets up a program step by step that builds on a very solid foundation of research in both the U.S. and the former U.S.S.R. All of the information is, and will continue to be pertinant. A friend lent me his copy and I was overwhelmed.

Best money spent for multiplication review bc it lets you use over and over which is exactly what kids need for learning multiplication (constant repetitious review). Have been using it for over a year now and works great. Also have the old alphabet set and used that for both my two older kids over a span of 3 years and are still in good enough shape that my third will also use it covering not s total of 8 years of use!!

Lee Harvey Oswald found on film during shooting, proves his innocence!!

Funny how when I was a kid I would examine all the pictures of Dealey Plaza. Hunting black and white photos for Lee Oswald whom had to leave the building sometime after the shooting had happened.
Years of looking through all the films and photos expecting to see Oswald walking away after being let go for the day by William Hoyt "Bill" Shelley.
Then one day I was on the Education Forum and Sean Murphy had spotted a man standing on the top step of the Texas School Book Depository in films taken by Darnell, and Wiegman during the shooting.
No one could identify this person standing on the top step among the other TSBD employees.
This is highly unusual as 50 years of study has been able to id everyone else on the steps, many along the street and yet
this man was not identified by other employees, the Warren Commission, FBI or any other investigative body.
Then Sean Murphy did a study of all those on the steps, identified each person, in fact he took the employee list from both warehouses, and by a process of elimination points out each and every employees location at the time shots rang out in the Plaza.
A few employees of the Elm street 'warehouse' were not outside, a couple of black porters and a large husky white male Jack Dougherty.
The other was supposedly Lee Oswald.
The Warren Commission and authorities tried to say Lee was in a second floor lunchroom drinking a coke immediately after the assassination of JFK. This goes against the notes taken during interrogation by Special Agent Bookout and copied by Captain Will Fritz.
Notes say "OUT FRONT WITH BILL SHELLEY" so if we have Lee saying he was out front and now a visual id of Lee 'out front' it sinks the case for Oswald being an assassin.
Obviously the man on the top step is not black. Obviously the man on the steps is not big and husky. Thus not the black porter or Dougherty.
Sean was left with one name from the list of employees, Lee Harvey Oswald.
Again this was methodical and scientific study done by Sean. When Sean put his work up on the Education Forum he was asking for any evidence of a flaw in his study or reasoning. It was peer reviewed and none could show it was any other employee.
Now you might say, "Ed its likely a stranger," but the FBI specifically asked each employee if they had seen any strangers in the building that day.
Not a single employee, besides Danny Arce helping an old man to find a bathroom, said any strangers were in the building. No strangers were among those on the stairs. Sean had Gary Mack, the late curator of the Sixth Floor Museum, ask Buell Wesley Frazier "whom was the man standing near him on the steps."
Gary Mack responded that Buell thought it was Bill Shelley, yet Bill Shelley had left the steps and walked down Elm extension to see what had happened in the motorcade and the commotion near the knoll and railroad yard. Shelley was in suit and tie, PM is not in suit and tie.
Thus the man on the steps is not Bill Shelley, this confirmed by other employees, and again leaves Sean Murphy with one name Lee Harvey Oswald.
In this book Stan Dane does an incredible job of documenting this Game Changer for historical reference.
We can see Lee Oswald standing on the steps as John F Kennedy is gunned down in the Wiegman and Darnell films. Closer analysis shows a match for Oswalds and Prayer Man's profiles, PM or Prayer Man being a term coined by Sean to describe PM's stature as if praying.
Much more study is taking place at ROKC (reopenkennedycase.org) that confirms Sean's work.
What does this mean for the Oswald did it contingent? It relegates it to defamation. Even the Chief of Police said he could not place Oswald in that window firing that rifle. I wonder why? Could it be due to the fact that Lee never owned a rifle, never shot at anyone, and was not even on the sixth floor when assassins murdered our President.
What does this do for a case of conspiracy? It throws the one involving Oswald in the trash receptacle and moves it to other employees, or out of the building entirely.
A must read for anyone whom thinks Oswald did it.

Oswald was on the steps during the assassination, don't take my word for it, read the book.

The most significant recent development in the JFK case

After years of muffled messages regarding the true nature and meaning of the fleeting imagery captured in film exposed during and immediately after JFK's assassination, Stan Dane has summarized a body of work from researcher Sean Murphy that although obscure within it's original format, has lived on through the strength of the information contained in it. Amazingly thorough and cleanly concise, Stan utilizes a light narrative form that provides an unimposing, complimentary framework for his presentation of Sean's case, which rocks the foundations of critical portions of the official record previously accepted as factual by all concerned. This book provides us with a reasonable and now written basis for reopening the JFK case.

Regarding “Ralph Yates’” review, Greg Parker has knocked it into a cocked hat in his response in the comments section.

The attempt to manipulate the Prayer Man image so as to support the outlandish claim by Duncan MacRae that Prayer Man is a woman is the stuff of desperation. It’s best viewed as a piece of burlesque providing light relief from serious research on a deadly serious subject.

The first problem with the Prayer Woman divertissement is that Prayer Man looks like a man. Hence the name, Prayer Man, the name given to the image from the very beginning. The second problem with it is that it looks very like LH Oswald. The third problem is that there is a huge amount of documentary and other evidence which proves beyond reasonable doubt that Prayer Man is Oswald.

All of this evidence was presented by Sean Murphy in the Education Forum in 2013 and it has been re-ordered and re-presented in book form by Stan Dane.

For example, consider the following: Buell Wesley Frazier was captured on film standing in the TSBD doorway in a position where it is absolutely certain that he knows whether or not Prayer Man is Oswald.

He has been asked twice about Prayer Man in recent years and on neither of these occasions has he denied that Prayer Man was Oswald. The only possible reason for this non-denial is that Prayer Man is in fact Oswald.

For anyone interested in the assassination of President John F Kennedy, this book is essential reading.

A little out dated with SOME things, but Great book

Great book all and all. SOME of the things, are a little out dated, like the updates on, yet again, another revision of the ACOG's statement on VBACs. Also, I am against routine IVs and EFMs, the author states that VBAC carries little risk to baby, so my question is, why routine EFM, just because you are a VBAC? Also, according to new studies, a laboring woman burns over 800 calories an hour. If this is the case, a laboring woman will need more than ice chips and juice. Do your research on "routine" procedures, couple that with this book and you are set to go. I also recommend "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth". It has the same concept of getting the FACTS across and not so much opinions of individuals.

I had a successful VBAC b/c of this book...

I loved this book! Dr. Bruce Flamm should be given an award for his no nonesense view of VBAC. He is the reason I left my doctor at 6 months pregnant so I could pursue a doctor who didn't want to cut me open just because I had a c-section the last pregnancy!!

You need to buy this book if you are looking to do a VBAC!! It is not as outdated as some would say. It still applies today!

Beethoven’s irascible, controlling, often callous, and even cruel personality constitutes the archetype of the great but monstrous titan of art, and just how much his life was to blame for his difficulty may not have been as thoroughly appreciated as Suchet now allows it to be. Besides the legendary hearing loss that began in his twenties, Beethoven suffered at base from an irresponsible, alcoholic father (who yet fostered his son’s musical career); an erratic, possibly demented mother; and a consequently chaotic family environment. Still, early on, before the deafness, before recognition as a musical paragon of the highest possible order, Beethoven could, as the report-card phrase puts it, work and play well with others, especially fellow musicians, and he acquired several long-haul friends who rolled with his punches, though, alas, no lover (he was just too gauche for even the most admiring woman). Although I'm not much for reading biographies, I am a musician who found this treatment of the life of this great composer mesmerizing and engaging. Suchet's attention to detail and well researched material comes shining through. He lures the reader into the life of this troubled musical genius and pulls aside the curtain to see the real man behind the music and the myth. It read more like a novel in some ways that a dry biography as Suchet effectively uses invented, along with actual well documented, dialogue that transported me back to early 19th century Vienna. The author's knowledge of music is apparent to say the least, as he describes Beethovan's compositions in technical terms while also giving insight into the mind of the composer at the time. I had a playlist of Beethovan's great works playing in my head while I read, from great works like the lyrical Pastorale symphony (no. 6) to the intense and technically difficult Kreutzer violin concerto. Yet he writes with an effortless style and plain language that can be understood by non music readers as well. Suchet also meticulously documents his sources and makes it clear, with little apology, where the facts end and his supposition takes over. Yet even then it all fits together in such a plausible way as to feel as if Beethovan pops off the page in all his disheveled and boisterous nature. For anyone who loves classical music and has an appreciation for Beethovan and an interest in learning more of the man behind the music this is a must read.

A Deeply Moving Portrait

He was an emotional basket case, an incorrigible misogynist, a social misfit, a shocking child abuser, a cheat, a liar, a grievance collector, a tenant from hell, a friend who would outrage even one’s sworn enemies. Those are only a few of the character traits attached to the unruly protagonist of John Suchet’s evocative new biography, BEETHOVEN: THE MAN REVEALED.

But the abrasive, even repugnant exterior enveloped an entity so musically gifted and spiritually complex that even one of the world’s most diligent Beethoven authorities acknowledges that writing the definitive, utterly complete story of the great composer’s life may be an unattainable goal. Nevertheless, Suchet comes so close it’s breathtaking.

Not content with half-a-dozen previous books aimed at serious performers, scholars and fellow musicologists, Suchet has turned his vast knowledge, imagination and passion for the Romantic-era genius to the audience that perhaps knows him best --- countless loyal music amateurs like those who tune in to his popular shows on Britain’s Classic FM radio network. That’s most of us; you and me, the friends we go to the occasional symphony concert with, the parents who really want to hear their children try and try again to play through Fur Elise, the adults who put piano lessons on their bucket-lists and actually follow through, people of all ages and walks of life who find priceless solace and pleasure in hearing a Beethoven symphony or string quartet.

For them, and anyone who cares about the profound and often visceral human story that forms any great artist, Suchet has crafted a memorable life that abounds with the kind of detail often overlooked by researchers focused only on verifiable facts. Not that BEETHOVEN: THE MAN REVEALED is lacking whatsoever in dates, documents, names, places and the like. But the resounding difference between this and a multitude of biographies written over the past two centuries is that the context of familiar “truth” gleaned from the composer’s turbulent 56 years on earth has been filled in and colored as never before by an intuitive understanding of human nature, social history and psychological insight.

Rather than pepper his prose with annotated musical score fragments, highly technical theoretical language, or annoying sequences of dry references (notes at the end are just enough to engage the reader further), Suchet unwraps Beethoven’s life as a lively connected narrative, energized on every page by his subject’s crises and triumphs, gains and losses, depression and optimism. His profound lifelong admiration for the German-Austrian genius, who lived from 1770 to 1827, never masks the serious problems Beethoven continually created for himself, his family, friends, colleagues, assistants, business associates, and not least, the countless unfortunate instrumentalists berated and bullied into premiering brilliant works that were chronically finished too late for sufficient rehearsal.

In so many respects, the Bonn native, brought up in a dysfunctional and emotionally confusing family, was his own worst enemy. Without seeming to learn anything from one stressful escapade to the next, he blundered rudely and awkwardly through intimate relationships, social engagements, chaotic finances, dozens of living quarters, and failed or disastrous performance projects. Just as disturbing were his unpredictable outbursts of remorse and generosity; friends never really knew where they stood.

But as Suchet repeatedly demonstrates, Beethoven’s art never failed him; that was the one golden thing everyone knew about him. In fact, some of his most prolific composition periods occurred when his personal life was an ongoing train wreck. That alone is enough to draw fascinated attention to the sheer doggedness of spirit that drove him to pour out the creative contents of a musical brain wired like no other of its day.

As technically complex as they are, Beethoven’s scores in any genre broke new ground and pushed out bold new boundaries on the traditional envelope of musical feeling. No one had ever encompassed such range and depth of human emotion --- so much so that masterpieces initially dismissed as “unplayable” (the Kreutzer violin sonata being a case in point) drove generations of performers, then and now, to strive far out of their artistic comfort zones to achieve the sublime. And it goes without saying how much audiences the world over have benefited.

Ironically, there isn’t anything actually new in BEETHOVEN: THE MAN REVEALED. Every fact, citation or anecdote (verifiable or not) has appeared in writing somewhere, sometime, somehow. Suchet even takes pains to emphasize the unoriginality of his material. What is refreshing and novel here is the imaginative and engaging way in which a formidably tangled skein of pre-existing strands has been deftly unraveled and re-woven into a deeply moving portrait of a composer who literally gave up his life to serve the relentless demands of his art.

Jacket description on the mark

As the jacket states, this book not written for the musicologist. Yet, there are enough musical references (how could there not be?) to satisfy most musically inclined people and to appeal to a broader audience. The attention to detail is engaging re his early life and sheds light on the man/composer he became. I found Suchet's suppositions drawn from the facts that are known to be of interest as well. All in all, an excellent treatment of the genius with all his flaws.
